The New York Islanders (colloquially known as the Isles) are a professional ice hockey team based within New York City. The Islanders will compete in Major League Volleyball (MLV) as a member of its Eastern Division. The team plays its home games at the Madison Square Garden.
History
In 2016, volleyball was a growing and increasingly profitable sport within New York City. Hockey and basketball were other popular sports at the time and generated considerable profits; however, most of the arenas were not used outside of those events. Mason Kaze, a New York sportswriter, became the sports editor at the Ontario Press in the 2020s, when he met Cody Taylor. Kaze developed the idea of an organized professional league to showcase college players upon their graduation and felt it could become profitable if properly assembled. Taylor, intrigued by the opportunity to attain additional income when the hockey or basketball teams were not playing or on the road, contacted several arena owners. On 6 September 2024, Kaze and Taylor and a group of twenty-two others assembled at the Commodore Hotel within New York City, as the Volleyball Association of America (VAA), where charter franchises were granted to major cities throughout the country.
