The Ngente are one of the minor clans (Awzia) of the Mizo people of Mizoram, northeastern India.[1][2]

The Ngente are subdivided into the sub-clans Kawngte, Zuahtite, Duahthlang, Duahchhak, Lailo, and Chawnghawih.[2] According to Mizo oral tradition, the Ngente lived in a settlement called Chong Honi. In approximately 1780, two Ngente chief brothers, Lalmanga and Ngaia, quarrelled and separated, leading to the dispersal of the clan into different areas of the Lushai Hills.[2] As one of the eleven minor clans collectively known as Awzia, the Ngente fell under the political authority of the dominant Sailo chiefs during the pre-colonial and colonial periods.[3] The Ngente are also counted among the Hmar clan grouping by some classifications, reflecting the complex and overlapping nature of Mizo clan affiliations.[4] In contemporary Mizoram, the Ngente use the common Mizo language (Duhlian) while preserving their clan identity.[1]
