Nguyen Ngoc Sau
Nguyen Ngoc Sau (April 2, 1928 – April 30, 2012) was an officer in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam with the rank of Colonel. He graduated in 1953 from the national military academy in Dalat. He chose to specialize in artillery because of his love of mathematics. He was an honest and responsible commander throughout his career.
Biography and military career
He was born on April 2, 1928, a devoted Catholic, in Vinh, Thanh Hoa, North Vietnam. In 1946 he graduated from lycée Van Lang, a French school, with a baccalaureate in mathematics.
Army of the Republic of Vietnam
He attended the Dalat military academy and graduated the 8th class in 1953, after graduation he was retained as the school topography instructor between 1953 and 1956. He then joined the Artillery branch and assumes a new position as artillery company commander in Ban Me Thuot. Two years later, in 1958 he was promoted to battalion commander of artillery 23rd battalion, in Dục Mỹ Camp. In 1960, he was sent to study Artillery forward observer officer class in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, USA. After returning from the US in 1961, he was assigned as battalion commander of artillery 7th battalion in Bien Hoa. In 1963 he was transferred to Danang as battalion commander of artillery 26th battalion with the rank of captain. Between 1965 and 1968 he assumed the position of Artillery Division commander 2nd Division in Quang Ngai with the rank of major. In 1969 he was sent to study the Command and Staff course at Army Leavenworth college in Leavenworth, Kansas, USA, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Upon return, he participated in Lam son 719 campaign as Chief of staff of Quang Da special zone in Danang till 1972. He was then assigned to the Four party joint military commission at Camp David, South Vietnam. In 1973 he attended the National Defense College then in 1974 assumed a position as Deputy Commander of Artillery Corps III with the rank of Colonel. His last post was Commander of Artillery Corps II.
1975
After April 30, he decided to stay in the country. The new government took him to study and rehabilitate from the South to the North through Quang Trung, Yen Bai, Ha Tay and Nam Ha prisons. It was not until 1988 that he was released. In 1990 he reunited with his children in the US. On April 30, 2012, he passed away in Irvine, California, at the age of 84.
