Niall Joseph Sheehy (born January 30, 1981) is an Irish-born musical theatre performer. He finished as the eighth place finalist on Superstar (UK TV series).

Life and career[edit]

Early life and career beginnings[edit]

Sheehy is from Bray in County Wicklow, Ireland where he lived with his father Paul, mother Fedelma and two sisters Eimile and Aoife. He auditioned for his first vocal competition when he was 7 years old.[1] In 2005-2006, Sheehy played Prince Charming in the musical Cinderella at Liberty Hall Theatre in Dublin.[2] The Irish Times characterized his performance as "a funny and charming Prince."[3] In 2007, Sheehy auditioned for the TV show Any Dream Will Do[4] and in the same year attended and spent one year training at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in Wood Green, in North London.[5] On January 11, 2010, Sheehy joined the West End production of Wicked as a swing at Apollo Victoria in London. He became third understudy for Doctor Dillamond on March 29, 2010, and third understudy for Fiyero on July 25, 2011. He joined the West End touring production of the musical comedy of Monty Python's Spamalot as an ensemble at Ambassador Theatre Group on December 12. He played the role of Dean in the musical workshop of The Commitments while he was touring with the cast of Spamalot.[5]

Superstar[edit]

On March 5, 2012, while Sheehy was on tour with Spamalot, he applied for an audition for the ITV television talent show Superstar. This show was looking for someone to play the part of Jesus in an arena tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. It was presented by Amanda Holden and the judges were Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jason Donovan, Dawn French and Melanie Chisholm. Sheehy was selected as one of the top eleven finalists. He gave up Spamalot to be able to take part in this show on April 7, 2012. The competition was televised on July 15 from Fountain Studios in Wembley and took place over nine nights (excluding Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 July).

Sheehy was eliminated from the competition on July 19, 2012, finishing in eighth place. Lloyd Webber said "I want to say something to Niall. This is very, very true. A very well known West End producer called me this morning in my hotel and said he'd seen a completely new Niall. I know there are roles for you in the West End. I think you could be a wonderful Marius in Les Miserables or a wonderful Raoul in the Phantom of the Opera. I think you are going to have a long West End career."[6]

After Superstar[edit]

Sheehy played Patrick Casey in an 80 minute workshop of the new musical The Last Maharajah at the Wyndham's Theatre in London's West End on October 1 and 2, 2012. And then he returned to Ireland to appear in the Irish production of Anglo: The Musical as the role of Jimmy at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin from November 13 to November 25, in 2012. After he left Anglo, he starred as the Prince in Snow White And The Adventures Of Sammy Sausages, at the Tivoli Theatre, Dublin from December 12, 2012, to January 12, 2013.[7][8] Sheehy then came back to London and performed at the Landor Theatre as Marcus in The Route To Happiness written by Alexander S. Bermange from February 19 to February 24, 2013.[9][10] Sheehy joined the |West End production of Les Miserables on May 13, 2013, and has been playing the role of rebellious student Feuilly and first cover for Enjolras since June 17 at the Queen’s Theatre in London.[11]
