Nick Grant (born 1988) is an American rapper and songwriter who is signed to Epic Records and Culture Republic. He is known for his 2017 album Return of the Cool and his 2018 mixtape Dreamin' Out Loud.
Early life[edit]
Nick Grant was born in Walterboro, South Carolina, in 1988.[1] He grew up in Atlanta where he cites André 3000 as favorite rapper.[4]
Career[edit]
After working with Grand Hustle manager Jason Geter in 2014,[5] Grant was eventually signed to Culture Republic.[6] In October 2015, he released his debut single "Royalty" alongside its video featuring CyHi the Prynce.[7] In 2016, Grant began getting traction with the release of his debut mixtape '88, which include appearances from BJ the Chicago Kid, Young Dro, Cyhi the Prynce, Big K.R.I.T., and Killer Mike.[8] In November 2016, Grant released a short film to accompany his singles "Get Up" featuring WatchTheDuck and "The Sing Along" featuring Ricco Barrino.[9] On January 13, 2017[10], he released his debut studio album Return of the Cool which include appearances from BJ the Chicago Kid, Ricco Barrino, Dominic Gordon, and WatchTheDuck.[8] On January 16, Grant performed the songs "Love" and "Get Up" with WatchTheDuck member Jesse Rankins on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. [10] In Feburary 2017, Return of the Cool peaked at number 28 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[11] It also reached number 15 on the Rap Albums chart[12] and two on the Heatseekers Albums chart.[13] In May 2018, he released his second mixtape Dreamin' Out Loud, which peaked at number 22 on the Heatseekers Albums chart.[14] It features appearances by DJ Khaled, Yo Gotti, DRAM and others.[8] Dreamin' Out Loud contains three singles: "'96 Bulls", "The Switch Up," and the Leikeli47-directed single "Black Woman".[15] In June 2020, Grant released his collaborative EP God Bless the Child with producer Tae Beast.[citation needed] In November 2021, Grant released Carolina Diaries, an EP containing four songs.[16] In January 2022, he released his second album titled Welcome to Loveland featuring Rikayah, Keyon Harrold, and Malaya.[17]
Musical style[edit]
Grant's musical style has been described as hip hop[8] and conscious hip hop soul.[18]
He grew up listening to artists such as Nas, Jay-Z, 2Pac, Biggie, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Rakim, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, and groups like A Tribe Called Quest and Outkast among many others.[2]
