Nick Parker (singer)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Nick Parker[edit]

Nick Parker (born Nicholas Paul Parker, 11th November 1974) is an English folk singer-songwriter from Street, Somerset. Primarily a solo/acoustic performer, he is often joined by fiddle player Ben Wain and multi-instrumentalist John Leonard, who are also part of his full band Nick Parker and The False Alarms. He sometimes tours with his daughter Flo Parker-Bombosch accompanying on vocals.

Biography[edit]

Nick Parker[1] began his musical career with brother Ant in the early 90's, first as duo The Mandolin Brothers, then as the co-frontman/vocalist/mandolin player in popular folk/rock/skiffle band Why? touring the UK and Europe with their unique brand of infectious tongue-in-cheek folk. The band played many gigs at festivals and events such as Greenbelt and Glastonbury, where they supported Transglobal Underground and Dreadzone, as well as sharing the stage for the early careers of several bands including Wondercub (who later became Athlete), Ruth (from which singer Matt Hales became Aqualung) and Jonny Quinn (Snow Patrol).

In 1998 Parker called it a day with Why? and started guitar band Tobermory[2] with Mark Stidson. After working with Music Producer, John Ratcliffe and several successful tours in Germany and the UK, Tobermory played their last gig in 2004.

Parker started his solo career in 2010, which has seen him perform across the UK, Germany [3], Sweden[4], Belgium and the Netherlands. He has released three full-length albums since this time - 2010’s The King of False Alarms[5], 2014’s Angry Pork and the Occasional Bird[6] and in 2017 Besta Venya[7], tracks from which have been played on various BBC6Music[8] shows.

Over the years Parker has shared the stage with acts such as Ian Prowse[9] and Amsterdam, Mark Chadwick[10] (The Levellers), The Wedding Present, Bright Eyes, Ben Marwood, Frank Turner, Will Varley, Beans On Toast, The Leylines[11] Mike Peters, Mike Scott, Ferocious Dog and Toploader [12] among others.

He regularly tours with Bristol based musician Gaz Brookfield (as a separate act, but also playing mandolin in his band The Company of Thieves). In 2017 Brookfield's The Company of Thieves became the first unsigned band to sell out the 750 capacity Bristol Bierkeller. Following a UK Tour with Nottingham's Ferocious Dog, Parker was also support for their historic third sold out Rock City gig, joining them on stage for several performances[13]. Since this time he has also toured Germany as a duo with Ferocious Dog's multi instrumentalist, mandolin/guitar/whistle/accordion/banjo player John Leonard[14], who has since become a regular member of Parker's False Alarms.

Although primarily a solo effort at festivals such as 2000Trees and Beautiful Days[15] and venues across the UK and Europe, Parker often plays with his now six piece band ‘Nick Parker and the False Alarms’ - a folky/rocky/country affair using guitars, fiddle, pedal steel, mandolin, accordion, trumpet, bass and drums. Over the last few years they have played at many UK festivals including Farmer Phil’s[16], The Godney Gathering[17], Chagstock, Greenbelt[18] Glastonbury[19] and Lakefest among many others.
