Nick Shevelyov
Nick Shevelyov (also published as Nicholas Shevelyov) is an American cybersecurity executive, author, and corporate board member. He served as Chief Security Officer and later Chief Information Officer of Silicon Valley Bank from 2007 to 2021.[1][2] He is the founder and CEO of vCSO.ai, a cybersecurity advisory firm, and the author of Cyber War...and Peace: Building Digital Trust Today with History as Our Guide.[3]
Early life and education
Shevelyov was born in the United States to an ethnically Russian family. During the Cold War, his family relocated to the Soviet Union, where his father worked for the U.S. State Department. Shevelyov spent his early childhood in Moscow, where the family's apartment was subject to surveillance by the KGB.[2][4]
He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from San Francisco State University, an MBA from the University of San Francisco, and has completed executive education in risk management at Harvard Business School.[5] He holds the CISSP, CIPP, and CISM certifications.[6]
Career
Deloitte
Shevelyov began his career in technology risk management at Deloitte, where he was part of the Enterprise Risk Services group and led cybersecurity and data privacy projects for global technology and financial services firms.[1][5]
Silicon Valley Bank (2007–2021)
In 2007, Shevelyov joined Silicon Valley Bank as its first Chief Security and Privacy Officer, where he built the bank's global cybersecurity and data privacy program.[1][2] In 2018, he assumed the additional role of Chief Information Officer, leading a team of over 500 technology professionals and overseeing initiatives in cloud migration, Agile delivery, and DevSecOps.[5] He returned to the Chief Information Security Officer role before departing the bank in 2021.[2]
During his tenure, Shevelyov served as an early design partner and advisor to cybersecurity companies including Palo Alto Networks, Zscaler, and FireEye.[5]
Post-SVB career
In 2022, Shevelyov founded vCSO.ai, a cybersecurity advisory firm providing fractional chief information security officer services, cybersecurity assessments, and executive placement.[5]
In 2025, he was nominated to the board of directors of authID (NASDAQ: AUID), a publicly traded biometric identity verification company.[5][7]
He also serves on the board of directors of Cofense, an anti-phishing technology company, and is a member of the NightDragon Advisory Council, which guides cybersecurity portfolio companies on strategic initiatives.[8] He is a member of the Technology Advisory Council at ForgePoint Capital, a cybersecurity-focused venture capital firm.[9]
Shevelyov serves on the board of directors of the Bay Area CSO Council, a peer organization for chief security officers from major technology and financial services companies.[1]
Publications
Shevelyov is the author of Cyber War...and Peace: Building Digital Trust Today with History as Our Guide, published by Lioncrest Publishing in 2021 (ISBN 978-1544517087 Search this book on
.).[3][10] The book draws parallels between historical military conflicts and modern cybersecurity challenges, applying lessons from figures such as Hammurabi, the Spartans, and Sun Tzu to contemporary digital risk management.[4]
The book received an endorsement from Jay Chaudhry, founder and CEO of Zscaler, and Neil Daswani, co-director of the Stanford Advanced Cyber Security Program.[3] Proceeds from book sales were donated through the Silicon Valley Bank Foundation to NextGen Cyber Talent, a nonprofit focused on increasing diversity in the cybersecurity workforce.[4][2]
He has contributed articles to Forbes on cybersecurity topics and has been a speaker at industry events including the Diligent Corporate Director Podcast and the HSBC Cybersecurity Innovation Day.[4][6][11]
