Nikki Hunt is a British interior designer, based in Singapore. She is the founder of the interior design company, Design Intervention.[1] She is a proponent of employing design solutions to advance health and wellness.[2][3] Hunt's work has been featured in the Andrew Martin Interior Design Review, an international compendium, described by The Sunday Times as "The Oscars of the Interior Design World".[4][5][6][7][8] Hunt's projects have been displayed in the Asia-Pacific region in magazines, periodicals, and regional TV shows.[9] Hunt co-hosted the reality TV series, Come On In with business partner Andrea Savage. The show aired on HGTV Asia and was shown across the Asia-Pacific region.[10]

Early life

Born in the UK, Nikki Hunt studied Economics at the London School of Economics.[11] She began a career in the finance industry, working in Hong Kong, Jakarta and London, before settling in Singapore with her husband-to-be in 1993.[12]

Career

Interior and architectural design

Nikki Hunt began a second career in interior design in 1998, freelancing for friends, before establishing the Design Intervention studio in 2004.[13] In 2010, Andrea Savage, joined the company and soon after Savage became Hunt’s business partner.[14] The design duo now lead a multicultural team, comprised of 11 nationalities.[15] The team is currently seen as one of the leading residential design studios in the Asia-Pacific region.[16]

The pair hosted Come On In, a design reality TV show for HGTV Asia, which aired throughout Asia-Pacific.[17] In 2019, Nikki Hunt’s work was profiled by Channel News Asia on their lifestyle show Remarkable Living.[18]

She writes for many of Singapore’s design publications.[19][20] In 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, she was invited to guest edit the May 2020 edition of Home & Décor, a Singapore design magazine, sharing her views on how the design industry would transform in the decade ahead.[21][22]

Philosophy

Hunt espouses a multi-sensory approach to design, stimulating the senses for a real physiological and emotional reaction to space.[23][24] She believes that good interior design can transform the way people feel as well as play a major role in their health.[25] She states that in the future homes will be perceived “as profoundly empowering and regarded as just as vital to our wellbeing as good nutrition or exercise – a super power to wield against an often stressful world".[26] [27]

Contribution to local industry

She supports several colleges in Singapore to encourage and inspire young design talent, through the Young Designer Award, an annual competition endorsed by the Design Singapore Council and open to students in a design-related course in Singapore.[28][29]

She has served as judge, mentor, and keynote speaker for the Loookbox Design Awards (LBDA) 2018 & 2019, an initiative of the Indesign Media Group to encourage and elevate the Singapore design industry.[30][31]
