Nikki Traylor-Knowles is an American marine ecologist and cell biologist. She is an assistant professor of Marine Biology and Ecology at the Rosentiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.[1] Her research focus is on cellular mechanisms of immunity in corals and ctenophores.[2] She focuses on using techniques from cell biology, genomics, microbiology, and molecular biology to study the cnidarian innate immune system and its interaction with climate change and other human-induced stressors.[3]

Early years and education

Traylor-Knowles was born in Montclair, New Jersey on January 17, 1980, to Donna Traylor-Knowles, and Walter Knowles. Her mother is a retired teacher and social worker and her father is a retired advertising executive and painter. Traylor-Knowles moved a lot growing up. She moved from Montclair, NJ to Pasadena, California to Scottsdale, Arizona to Albuquerque, New Mexico to Davenport, Iowa then back to Albuquerque. She remained in Albuquerque until she graduated from La Cueva High School in 1999. Traylor-Knowles obtained her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Johns Hopkins University in 2003 and 2004 respectively. She obtained her Ph.D. in biology from Boston University in 2012. In 2011, she was a postdoctoral researcher with Steve Palumbi at Stanford University at the Hopkins Marine Station until 2015. During her time as a post-doctoral researcher at Stanford University she earned a National Science Foundation Ocean Sciences Postdoc fellowship.

Early career

In 2016 Traylor-Knowles began working at the University of Miami's Rosentiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences as an assistant professor in biology. She strives to promote diversity in marine sciences.[3] She started the organization Black Women in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Science to provide a global network and support system of resources and mentorship for Black women in STEM fields.[4] Traylor-Knowles is a National Academy Science Fellow and has been awarded membership to the Sigma Xi scientific research honor society and received the University of Miami's provost award in 2018 and 2019.

Research

Traylor-Knowles is known for her research in cnidarian immunity. Her research includes studying the innate immune system of corals, sea anemones, and (the non-cnidarian) ctenophores. She studies the evolution of immunity, wound healing and regeneration. Her lab at the University of Miami investigates disease processes, environmental stress,[5] symbiosis, wound healing, regeneration, and cellular mechanisms of immunity. She uses techniques from cell biology to study the cnidarian innate immune system and its interaction with climate change and other human-induced stressors. A key to her research is the application of these techniques to conservation efforts through the development of biomarkers and developing innovative actions for saving coral reefs.[3]

Mentorship

Traylor-Knowles created Black Women in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Sciences to provide a network for creatives that embraces diverse perspectives and equitable collaboration.[4] She spoke with Cell in 2020 about starting Black Women in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Sciences.[6]
