Nilpawan Baruah (born 1 June 1936) is a painter[1] of Assam. In 2021, he was awarded the Assam Sourav Award[2] by the Government of Assam.[3]

Birth[edit]

Nilpawan Baruah was born on 1 June 1936 in Tamulisinga village near Teok in Jorhat district.[4] His father was Binanda Chandra Barua, known as 'Dhwani Kabi', and his mother was Lavanya Prabha Barua.[5]

Education[edit]

After passing the high school examination after several times appearing, Nilpawan Baruah did not pursue college education to concentrate on agriculture and social work. Inspired by a book by Pramathnath Basu, he decided to study at Santiniketan and came to Calcutta. He initially wanted to study agriculture, but became attracted to painting after seeing the paintings and teaching classes at Santiniketan and studied painting.[6]

Nilpawan Baruah joined Santiniketan in 1961 and took longer than it took to complete his bachelor's degree. After completing his painting studies at SantiNiketan, he studied glazed pottery at Sri Niketan. Later, he also studied painting at Garhi Studios in New Delhi.

Working life[edit]

In 1966, Nilpawan Baruah came to Assam from Calcutta and joined the Guwahati Art College as a teacher at the request of his father.[6]

Nilpawan Baruah has created a special style by painting miniature paintings on Charminar cigarette boxes and matchboxes. He started painting cigarette boxes in the 1960s and 1970s and was a heavy smoker at the time.[7]

Personal life[edit]

He was the spouse of late Dipali Barthakur, a renowned singer of Assam. Singer Dipali Barthakur suffered from motor neurone disease and lost her ability to sing and had to resort to a wheelchair to move around. In 1976,[8] he married Dipali Barthakur. After her marriage, Baruah took care of Dipali Barthakur until her death.[9]
