Nirmalya Ghosh (born 1974) is an Indian physicist known for his research in the field of Optical Polarization and related phenomena. He is a professor in the Department of Physical Sciences[1] and Centre of Excellence in Space sciences India (CESSI),[2] Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata.[3] At IISER Kolkata, Nirmalya established the bio-optics and Nano-photonics (bioNap)[4] research laboratory to carry out research on fundamental aspects of light-matter interactions and its diverse practical applications. The research of bioNap group headed by Ghosh on polarized light has impacted multiple areas of optical sciences from quantum optics, space optics, and biomedical optics, to material sciences and spectroscopy. Ghosh was the 2021 recipient of the G.G Stokes Award in Optical Polarization[5][6] by SPIE, the international society of optics and photonics. He is elected fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc).[7][8] and National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc)[9]
Education and career[edit]
Nirmalya Ghosh, born on 1 May 1974 at Khirpai in the Indian state of West Bengal, did his graduate studies at the University of Kalyani, from where he earned a B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree in Physics, following which he moved to Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur to obtain MTech in Photonics. He then joined Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore, a unit of Department of Atomic Energy, India, as a Scientist. At RRCAT, Ghosh worked in the field of biophotonics dealing with applications of light in the domain of biomedical imaging and diagnosis. He also obtained his PhD at RRCAT while working as a Scientist during 1998 – 2007. Subsequently, he moved to University of Toronto, Canada for his postdoctoral research. Dr. Ghosh joined IISER Kolkata in 2010 and established the bioNap research group to carry out research in the domain of Nanophotonics, Biophotonics and Polarization optics. He serves as a Professor at IISER Kolkata now.
Research[edit]

Ghosh’s research has been focused on the use of polarized light to study fundamental light-mater interactions and to develop novel experimental techniques for diverse applications ranging from biomedical imaging and diagnosis, materials sciences, optical spectroscopy, space optics instrumentation and in quantum optics. He has developed new concepts of quantum weak measurements using classical polarized light and opened new paradigm of weak measurements in the domain of nanophotonics. He has also made exceptional contributions to fundamental studies on spin orbit interaction of light, dealing with coupling of spin and orbital angular momentum degrees of freedom of light. These studies have opened novel route towards development of spin-orbit photonic devices for numerous potential applications involving control and manipulation of light at nanometer length scale. He has also developed novel experimental techniques for polarization Mueller matrix measurements and inverse analysis and used these techniques for the characterization of complex nanomaterials and biomaterials. Ghosh has authored over one hundred papers in Science, Physical Review Letters[10], ACS Nano, and Lasers and Photonics Reviews.[11] He has also written several invited reviews, book chapters and a text book in optical physics and photonics. Ghosh has served as editorial board member of several journals and guest edited special issues on polarization optics in journals.[citation needed]
Awards and recognition[edit]
Ghosh was awarded the G.G Stokes Award in optical polarization by SPIE (2021), the international society of optics and photonics.[12] This award is presented for exceptional contribution to the field of optical polarization and related phenomena. In recognition of his overall contributions in the domain of physics, he was elected Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc) and Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc) in 2022[13].
