Niton are a Swiss-Italian experimental electronic, ambient and noise-industrial band. They formed in 2012 and consist of Luca Xelius Martegani on analogue synthesizers, El Toxyque on amplified objects and Zeno Gabaglio on electric cello. The trio have released three albums via Pulver und Asche Records.[1] On various occasions the line-up has also included other musicians, video performers, writers and actors.

History[edit]

Beginning and eponymous album[edit]

The group met for the first time in autumn 2012 in the context of the fourth 'Drone night', an evening-happening of sound experimentation at the Officine creative in Barasso, in the province of Varese. The recording and subsequent selection of that performance was published in 2013 by the Swiss label Pulver und Asche Records, in the eponymous album Niton.

Tiresias[edit]

Tiresias is Niton's second album, released in 2015, by the Swiss label Pulver und Asche Records. Moving on from a theme of strong mythological evocation "Niton deliver their take on the end of the world in deep listening instrumental form"[2] with "a strong cinematographic appeal, which is empowered by symphonic treatments"[3] which leads to "an impressive experimental work featuring multiple sounds and noises. It all sounds like a sonic puzzle made of endless little pieces, which in the end create a compact sonic work".[3]

Since 2015 the band collaborates with video artist Roberto Mucchiut (also known as ROM) who takes care of the visual part of the Niton's video clips and live performances and that can be considered as the fourth Niton member.

Cemento[edit]

With their third album Cemento, released in 2021 by the Berlin-based label Shameless Records and Pulver und Asche Records, Niton rework sound materials collected over five years in different places and situations, such as theatres,[4][5] recording studios, Alpine artificial lakes,[6] Romanesque churches[7] and arthouse cinemas.[8] The album appears as "an unspoken narrative tie it all together. Clever usage of the textures means that the elements bounce into the infinite. Both beats and drone-like works come into the fray. Throughout it all they maintain a playful sensibility, akin a little bit to Matmos' work".[9] Cemento bring together "improv, noise, and jazz into a wild yet tasteful whole".[9]

The Wire about the album wrote "Their music has a real warmth, somewhere between the sylvan melancholy of a Popol Vuh soundtrack and the sweaty fug of an extended Can jam".[10]
