Noel Baxter was a fictional footballer who appeared in the comic strips in the British boys' comic Roy of the Rovers during the 1970s, 80s. He was a defender, playing for Melchester Rovers and the England national team. He first appeared in the strip in 1971 and died in 1986.
Career
Club
Noel was another product of the Melchester Rovers youth system. Baxter signed on as an apprentice in 1968, making a first team debut in emergency circumstances against Millborough in the opening match of the 71/72 season; he was so nervous and had to be substituted. However, this was probably the only blip in his long and successful Rovers career.
Noel was instrumental in Rovers signing fellow full back Ralph Derry from second division Westbank.
International
He played for England on a number of occasions, notably when Roy Race had temporary charge of the national team in January 1978, when England played Holland. Noel was the dressing room clown and often was the instigator of practical jokes.
Death
Tragically Noel was killed on 19 July 1986 when eight of the Rovers were innocent victims of a bungled act of terrorism in war-torn Basran.[1][2] Five more players died, including Jimmy Slade.
Style of play
He played as a right back.
Legacy
Noel was one of the finest attacking full backs to play the game. Roy and Rocky in the 2000 Roy of the Rovers Annual named Noel as part of their all-time greatest Rovers line-up.
