Nomad is an American adventure-romance film[1] written and directed by Taron Lexton and produced by TXL Films.[2]  It stars Leo Woodall and Sana’a Shaik as a pair whose position on Earth changes every twelve hours due to a mysterious condition.  Filming locations spanned seven continents and over twenty countries, with the film using no green screens or studio sets.

Plot

Nomad’s published plot outline is: “The story follows Nellie, a stifled city girl who has never traveled outside her hometown, as she discovers Ben, a mysterious nomad with a bizarre condition that rips them inexplicably across every corner of the earth. Every day is a fight for survival in the harshest and most beautiful environments on earth. As they travel, they grow closer to each other, while the strange forces of Ben's condition seek to rip them apart.”[3]

Production

As the plot involves the main characters appearing in a new position on the globe every twelve hours, and director Taron Lexton decided not to use any green screens or studio sets,[4] the production shot on seven continents and over twenty countries.[5]

Filming began in July 2019 in Chile, the first scene shot against the backdrop of a total solar eclipse.[6] With only one chance of 2 minutes and 18 seconds to capture those shots, and years before an eclipse of that angle and clarity would occur again, the team planned the details for several months and prepared on location for three days beforehand.[7][8]  They were joined by photographer Ted Hesser as a consultant, Hesser being known for his viral shot of the 2017 eclipse over the United States.[9]

The Nomad team captured the eclipse with an Arri Alexa LF.  Later, the Alexa Mini LF was delivered to them in Africa and used for the remainder of the shoot.  Nomad was one of the few productions to receive a pre-production model of this camera, along with the films 1917, which won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography,[10] and Dune (2021).[11] Nomad was shot entirely in large format using ARRI Signature Prime lenses.[12]  Footage from the film was used by ARRI as the opening sequence of their 2020 showreel.[13]

In early 2020, principal photography wrapped hours before international border closures began due to the global pandemic.[14]

Cast and Crew

Nomad stars English actor Leo Woodall as “Ben” and Australian actress Sana’a Shaik as “Nellie”.  Featured cast include Jordi Webber of New Zealand[15][16] and multi-award-winning[17][18] actress Abbey Hoes of the Netherlands.[19]  The international cast was assembled from over 28,000 submissions received by casting.[20]

Nomad is director Taron Lexton’s second feature-length film; his first, In Search of Fellini, obtained an 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes[21] and earned him the Best Director award at the Ferrara Film Festival.[22]  Award-winning Lexton has directed hundreds of projects, including documentaries, short films, music videos, and commercials, including three Super Bowl commercials.[23]  His work has aired on major networks such as Fox, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, MTV, and CNN.[24]

Lexton is also a Producer on the film, along with Nathan Lorch and Milena Ferreira, and Co-Producer Nick Lane.  Brandon Marion is the Executive Producer, and Nicole Pase and Kim Kutner are Nomad’s Associate Producers.[25]

Nomad’s cinematographer is Kevin Garrison, who was also the cinematographer on Lexton’s In Search of Fellini.[26]

Release

Nomad is slated for release in 2021.[27]
