Non Serviam is a French Extreme Metal collective. Its members are anonymous. The band takes its name from the formula Non serviam, Latin for "I will not serve". The phrase is traditionally attributed to Satan, who is thought to have spoken these words as a refusal to serve God in heaven.

History[edit]

Non Serviam was created in the early 2000s in Southern France.[1] as a one-man-band focused on instrumental Breakcore and Digital Hardcore, using many samples and some guitar. The project was created after playing in local bands in Southern France, however, it did not publish anything until Un petit peu d'amour pour la haine in 2014[2].

In 2018, the project, now located in Paris[3], is joined by another musician, trained as a baroque harpsichordist, which will become more and more important by adding to the repertoire of Non Serviam instruments such as the piano, the keyboards, the harpsichord, the accordion or the spinet[4] while also singing alongside the main composer, who also provides the screaming vocal parts. They release a few singles.

On September 26, 2020, during the Covid Lockdowns, Non Serviam plays a live improvised set airing on CVLT Nation's Sonic Unrest Vol.3 festival[5]. The duo appears, as always, masked and/or made up[6], as in their videos and official photos. The performance was self-released on April 2, 2021 as an EP called Improvisation 3. Take 1. : Un Rêve (Il était nuit) @ CVLT Nation Live on their Bandcamp page[7]

On January 18, 2021, Non Serviam announce signing to Code666[8]. Their second album Le Cœur Bat was released on April 23, 2021[9] through Code666/Aural Music (Italy) for the CD and 2xLP versions and Trepanation Recordings (UK) for limited to 25 copies cassette version[10]. All formats containing different artworks.

On May 1st, 2021, Non Serviam releases simultaneously two EPs as a double CD on Trepanation Recordings. The first one, Work, is a concept album about Work and exploitation, the second one, Live Imrovisations Vol. 1, contains two improvised jams recorded live, one instrumental, the other on a text by French poet and essayist Sully Prudhomme.

A few months later, the collective announces the birth of a side-project called Biollante (named after Biollante the rose hybrid kaiju who first appeared in Toho's 1989 film Godzilla vs. Biollante[11] oriented towards Industrial Hip Hop and Digital Hardcore, citing influences such as Techno Animal, Death Grips, IC3PEAK, with the participation of several rappers and musicians from Paris and its suburbs. They announced a first album for 2022. On October 1st, Absent Angels, Non Serviam remixwas published by the Russian-Italian acoustic folk singer kariti.

On November 12, 2021, Il Pleut Partout Derrière, a new mini-album of 7 tracks and 44 minutes (called an EP by the collective) and containing two covers (Nirvana's Something In The Way and Bloodiest's Obituary) is released on CD via Trepanation Recordings. A few weeks later, the collective announces the Asian and European double release on February 12, 2022[12] of a Split EP with Gallkrist (ex-Gallhammer) in collaboration with the labels Trepanation Recordings (England) and Bad Moon Rising (Taiwan).

Musical style and influences[edit]

Non Serviam's general musical style has been stated by critics to be a genre-hopping[13][14][15] blend of Black Metal[16][17][18], Avant-garde music[19][20][21] Industrial Metal[22][23][24], Sludge Metal[25][26][27], Breakbeat[28], Darkwave[29][30], Deathrock[31], Trip-Hop[32][33][34], Baroque music[35][36][37][38], Doom/Sludge[39][40], Crust punk[41][42], Grindcore[43][44][45], Shoegaze[46][47] and Punk-Hardcore[48][49][50] along with various other musical styles: "This anonymous collective from Paris might be not just the latest “hot shit” but a band that changes things, like Ornette Coleman and Refused, like My Bloody Valentine and Napalm Death, like Einsturzende Neubauten and Saint Vitus. What? Sounds strange? Okay, let me give you just one single comparison: Atari Teenage Riot. Non Serviam deliver what ATR only promised: ANYTHING goes on their record Le Coeur Bat."[51]. The Collective's sound has also been described as "Anaal Nathrakh going full-bore"[52], "a terrifying, screaming, Butthole Surfers roller coaster running off the tracks at 100mph"[53], .

Placed #7 of its Top 10 AVANT GARDE Albums of 2020, CVLT Nation describes Non Serviam as "one of the sickest bands in the world, not only because they create music without form but also the fact they are not willing to conform. The band’s full length Le Coeur Bat is otherworldly awesome and creates sonic portals to new planes of existence."[54]

In interviews[55][56][57], the group cited as influences: Neurosis, Godflesh, Catharsis, Swans, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Orchid, IC3PEAK, Darkthrone, Nasum, Enemy Soil, Khanate, Throbbing Gristle as well as Autechre, Venetian Snares, Aphex Twin, Cat power, PJ Harvey or Joy Division.

Their songs' lyrics address primarily authoritarianism, revolutionnary struggle, youth suicide, psychiatry, prisons (in which several of its members and collaborators have already been detained[58]) and other anarchist themes (making for example a cover of the traditional anonymous anarchist song of 1901 ''Inno Individualista''[59]). In an interview the collective declared that "Anarchism can be many things, for better or for worse. For us, it is a revolutionary project that has a history, possible teachings, but in any case it is neither a kind of music, nor a culture, nor a counter-culture, nor a scene. It is a body of ideas and practices with many tendencies that are more or less compatible with each other. We are part of a history of struggles and revolts to which those who participate in this music have given their lives and which in itself has little to do with music, even though this history may have been traversed by music and runs through our music. It is even less for us a consumer choice, a posture on social networks, or a stamp that we add to give a political varnish to albums with a symbol that looks nice on patches. Besides, like everything else, anarchism runs through our music, not because of a conscious choice, or because we would think that anarchism needs music, but simply because this music is made of who we are."[60].

In their songs, Non Serviam has quoted verses or entire poems from Henri Michaux, Louise Labé, Aloysius Bertrand, Sully Prudhomme and sampled the movies Videodrome, Spartacus, La Bande à Bonnot (1968), Blue Collar, We Need to Talk About Kevin, La Jetée, Kaiju movies, etc.
