Normani Kordei Hamilton (born May 31, 1996),[1] better known as Normani Kordei, is an American singer. She is a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony, which was formed on the second season of The X Factor US.

Early life[edit]

Normani Kordei Hamilton was born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in New Orleans.[2] She and her family relocated to Houston, Texas, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. At a young age, Normani competed in gymnastic and beauty pageants.[3] When she was 13 years old, she recorded her first song.[2]

Career[edit]

The X Factor[edit]

Hamilton auditioned on the second season of The X Factor US in 2012 with Chain of Fools by Aretha Franklin.[4] She advanced to the next round after getting all four approval yeses from the judges. It was during the second round of boot camp that led to her elimination.[5] That marked the end of Normani's X Factor journey as a solo artist, but it wasn't until she got called, and brought back to the show and put into a group with four other girls, who would later become Fifth Harmony.[6] At the end of the show's season, the group managed to make it to the finale and finished in third place.[7]

In October 2013, Fifth Harmony released their first EP, Better Together. Subsequently, the group released their debut album, Reflection (2015), and their sophomore album, 7/27 (2016).[8] In December 2016, it was confirmed that Fifth Harmony's third album was underway.[9]

Solo projects[edit]

In 2015, Hamilton released two dance videos, "Commas" and "Do Not Disturb" with Fifth Harmony's choreographer, Sean Bankhead.[10] As of January 2017, she has also released three cover-mashups with the help of The Invaders.[11]

Dancing with the Stars[edit]

On March 1, 2017, Hamilton was revealed as one of the contestants who would compete on season 24 of Dancing with the Stars. She is paired with professional dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy.[12]

Musical Influences[edit]

Kordei regards Beyoncé as her main musical influence. Other influences include Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, Jhené Aiko, TLC, and Destiny's Child.[13][14] In an interview with MTV, Kordei also revealed prestigious about the Canadian rapper and singer Drake, after sharing a cover of Drake's songs "Fake Love" and "Sneakin" (2016) she said: “Drake has been one of the most influential artists in this generation who consistently releases dope material. I respect his artistry so much. He always resonates with me in some way so I decided to get creative and put my own spin on this mash-up."[15] While reviewing the album 7/27, the editor Peter Meister from Sputnikmusic praised Kordei's vocals and performance during each song, he noted that "Normani's sensuality giving off a different, refreshing flavor into every song put out."[16]

Philanthropy[edit]

Along with Fifth Harmony, Hamilton had been involved with many charities like Girl Scouts of America and the Ryan Seacrest Foundation.[19][20] In September 2016, Hamilton was named the Diversity Ambassador for The Cybersmile Foundation, an international non-profit organization providing support for victims of cyberbullying and online hate campaigns, after being racially abused online.[21] On January 26, 2017, Hamilton was named as the first official celebrity ambassador for the annual Stars & Strikes Celebrity Bowling Event & Tournament hosted by the non-profit organization A Place Called Home. [22] On February 24, 2017, it was announced that Normani partnered with American Cancer Society as a global ambassador to help increase awareness about the importance of breast cancer screening and HPV vaccination.[23]
