The North Texas–Rice football rivalry is a college football rivalry game between two universities, the University of North Texas Mean Green and the Rice University Owls. The current winner is North Texas Who Won 41-17 against Rice

The two teams first met on November 10, 1988 at Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas. At the time, the Mean Green were members of the Southland Conference while the Owls were members of the Southwest Conference. The game ended in a 33–17 victory for North Texas. The two teams would not play each for another 20 years, playing on September 27, 2008 at Rice Stadium. The Mean Green were members of the Sun Belt Conference while the owls were members of Conference USA. The game ended in a 77–20 victory for the Owls and is considered to be one of the worst losses in history for North Texas football.[1] North Texas joined Conference USA prior to the start of the 2013 season, joining Rice in the conference's West Division. The two teams have played one another every year since then.

Notable games[edit]

The Mean Green and Owls first played each other on November 19, 1988 at Rice Stadium in Houston. North Texas was a member of the Southland Conference in NCAA Division I-AA (now known as Division I FCS) while Rice was a part of the Southwest Conference in Division I-A (now known as Division I FBS). The game ended in a 33–17 upset victory for the Mean Green, who had beaten Texas Tech, also from the Southwest Conference, a week prior.[2] North Texas finished the season with a record of 8–4, including an appearance in the NCAA Division I-AA Playoffs where they lost to Marshall by a score of 0–7 in the first round. Rice finished their season with a record of 0–11.

The two teams met for the second time in 2008 after not having played one another for 20 years. The game was close at the end of the 1st quarter with Rice leading UNT 21–13. The Mean Green's last score of the came occurred with 11:57 left in the 2nd quarter on a 15-yard run from Cam Montgomery to trail 20–28 following Jeremy Knott's extra point. The Owls would go on to score 49 unanswered points to win the game 77–20.[3] The Mean Green finished the season with a record of 1–11, with their only win being a 51–40 victory over Western Kentucky. Rice finished the season with a record of 10–3, including a 38–14 victory over Western Michigan in the Texas Bowl.

2013 marked the first time the two teams played each as members of the same conference. The game was held on October 31 at Apogee Stadium with North Texas winning 28–16. The game became notable for an 8 play goal line stance by the Mean Green's defense that kept the Owls from scoring during the 4th quarter.[4] North Texas's win made them bowl eligible for the first time since 2004. The Mean Green finished their season with a record of 9–4 and a 36–14 win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. The Owls finished the season with a record of 10–4 and appeared in the C-USA Conference Championship Game where they defeated Marshall 41–24.
