Not For Resale is the debut studio album by British rapper and producer Krafty, released by Monumental Records. The album was recorded in various studios during it's recording including The Spit Pit in Folkestone, Kent and Margate, Kent as well as RNR Studios in Biggin Hill, Westerham.
Title[edit]
The album title, Not For Resale, was thought up as a joke. Krafty didn't believe people would bother paying for a copy, let alone resell it. The idea was to release the project for free to add more sarcasm to the title but after spending hundreds of pounds on production and marketing costs, the album eventually went on sale via digital stores, CD and cassette.
Background[edit]
Originally planned to be released as a free mixtape, Not For Resale was conceptualised in 2009. After putting his album One Man Show on the shelf, an album that had been recorded through the years 2007 and 2008, Krafty focused his efforts on a project with all new material. Halfway through recording songs for the mixtape, a computer malfunction which lost the project files forced Krafty to start the record from scratch. By 2010, Krafty had recorded the songs I Wanna Get Signed, How Much I Love You, If I Don't Make It, Freedom and Take Me Away. All of which made it onto the final cut of the album aside from If I Don't Make It which was eventually released in 2014 on the Spare Change EP.
On 21 November, 2011, Krafty released the single I Wanna Get Signed alongside a music video shot in South Bank, London by HoodVideoShop.
Not For Resale was released 29 November, 2013 under Krafty Records and eventually re-released under Monumental Records.
Music[edit]
Production[edit]
Production consists of a blend of boombap hip-hop, synth-enthused pop-rap and ballad rap. The boombap production borrows from jazz and blues samples and the synth productions are all original compositions. Feelin' High is the only song on the album to be produced entirely by Krafty himself, whereas the rest of the music production was composed by other producers including Sinima, Sean Divine and Oskar Mike and others.
Lyrics[edit]
The lyrics on the album range from sarcastic, self-deprecating humour to darker thoughts of mortality, poverty, relationships and the struggles of being an underground rapper.
Recording[edit]
Recording for the album began in 2009 until it was halted by a computer malfunction. After losing all of the project files, Krafty started again with the songs that appear on the final version of the album. The last song to be recorded was Sell By Date in 2013, just a month before the album's release. The album features new appearances from the obsessed groupie Anna who appeared on the mixtape Not For Replay as well as the reappearance of Norman Bigg, Krafty's manager. Not For Resale also introduces the judgemental hater/secret fan who can be heard complaining to Krafty on the outro, No Refund.
