Noteable is an online education platform built from Jupyter Notebooks, providing access to various programming languages including Python and R. In addition to standard computational notebooks, Noteable also provides specialised kernels with package combinations for machine learning and geospatial analysis, as well as an RStudio interface.
It was developed by EDINA, a centre for digital expertise at the University of Edinburgh, and currently has over 8000 active users at universities, Further Education institutions, and schools across the UK.

Noteable was founded in 2017 by EDINA, a directorate of the Information Services Group at the University of Edinburgh.[1] It was created in response to a need for a hosted computational notebook platform among lecturers at the University of Edinburgh College of Science and Engineering. The School of GeoSciences had developed a limited in-house service, and worked with EDINA to build a central solution which could be offered to other departments.
The service was developed in line with the University's Learning & Teaching Strategy[2] and the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal, of which the University is a part.[3]
Since November 2020, Noteable licenses have been available to universities and Further Education institutions in the United Kingdom through a CHEST agreement.[4]
Open-source contributions[edit]
In 2019, the nbgrader extension for Jupyter Notebooks was integrated into Noteable, allowing instructors to create and distribute assignments, collect students' submissions, and autograde work. On 29th-31st May 2019, the University of Edinburgh hosted an nbgrader hackathon funded by Bloomberg, where participants were encouraged to work on new features for the extension.[5] This event led to the implementation of many improvements for nbgrader, including support for instructors teaching multiple courses and integrating a mechanism for distributing feedback to students.[6]
To enable nbgrader to work in a cloud environment, EDINA also created an open source extension for nbgrader called nbexchange, and modified nbgrader to use this extension.[7]

Remote teaching[edit]
During the COVID-19 pandemic when the UK went into a nation-wide lockdown in March 2020, academics at the University of Edinburgh converted a planned in-person text and data mining course into a fully online course using Noteable.[8] Noteable was used to teach text and data mining to humanities and social science students, all of whom had little to no experience of coding. Python was used as the main programming language.
The course was piloted in June 2020 with 25 participants from the Schools of Law, Linguistics and Business, based in several countries and with different time zones. After a successful pilot run, the course was repeated in September 2020, with sign-ups allowed from outside of the University of Edinburgh. In this second iteration, over half of the participants were workers in the Scottish Government and the commercial sector.
This course also made use of Noteable's GitHub integration feature +GitRepo, which allowed students to import repositories from GitHub without having to learn how to use Git and without downloading files onto their machines.
Noteable became available as Software-as-a-Service for educators and academic institutions in 2020.[9]
