NovelAI
NovelAI is an online cloud-based, SaaS model, paid subscription service for AI-assisted storywriting[1] and text-to-image synthesis,[2] originally launched in beta on June 15, 2021,[3] with the image generation feature later implemented on October 3, 2022.[2] NovelAI is operated by Anlatan, based in Delaware.[4]
Features
NovelAI uses a custom implementation of the source-available Stable Diffusion[1] text-to-image diffusion model that is specifically trained on a Danbooru-based[2][4][5] dataset to generate images from text prompts, and a GPT-based[6][7] model to generate storywriting prose.[8] The NovelAI terms of service states that all generated content belong to the user, regardless if the user is an individual or a corporation.[2] Anlatan states that generated images are not stored locally on their servers.[4]
Models
Available GPT text generation models include Calliope GPT-Neo 2.7B, Sigurd GPT-J 6B[3], Genji GPT-J 6B (Japanese storyteller model), Snek GPT-J 6B (Python programming language model), Euterpe Fairseq 13B, and Krake Neo-X 20B.[9] NovelAI also provides text to speech models (TTS V1 & TTS V2) to read text generations in a variety of different AI-trained voices.[citation needed]
Release history
NovelAI launched with a GTP-Neo text model for all subscribers.[citation needed] Shortly after, in July 2021, a GPT-J 6B model, Sigurd, was introduced for all tiers, soon followed by Custom AI Module training, allowing users to train the AI on their own writing of choice. In October 2021, the Snek GPT-6b model for Python code & Genji GPT-6b Japanese Storyteller models were introduced. The following year, on February 6, 2022, Euterpe, a Fairseq 13B GPT model, was released for all tiers (including free trial users) alongside Euterpe Custom AI Module Training.[citation needed] On March 12, 2022, a 20B GPT model, Krake, and a V1 TTS neural network-based improved Text to Speech engine were implemented.[citation needed] Shortly after the one-year anniversary, on June 21, 2022, an updated TTS V2 with the ability to create custom voices by mixing voice seeds was added to NovelAI.[citation needed]
Reception
Immediately following implementation of its image generation functionality, NovelAI became a widely discussed topic in Japan, with some online commentators noting that its image synthesis features are very adept at producing close impressions of anime characters,[2] while others have expressed concern that it is a paid service that is reliant on a diffusion model where the original machine learning training data consists of images that have been redistributed without the consent of the original artists.[2][10][4][5][11] Attorney Kosuke Terauchi notes that, since a revision of the law in 2018, it is no longer illegal in Japan for machine learning models to scrape copyrighted content from the internet to use as training data;[4] meanwhile, in the United States where NovelAI is based, there is no specific legal framework which regulates machine learning, and thus the fair use doctrine of US copyright law applies instead.[4] Danbooru has posted an official statement in regards to NovelAI's use of the site's content for AI training, expressing that Danbooru is not affiliated with NovelAI, and does not endorse nor condone NovelAI's use of artists' artworks for machine learning.[4][5]
Also in response to the topic of NovelAI, Narugami, founder of the Japanese freelance artist commissioning website Skeb, stated on October 5, 2022 that the use of AI image generation is prohibited on the platform.[12]
