Nugent RC High School was a boys' catholic secondary school in Liverpool. It closed in 1995 due to low results.[citation needed]
History[edit]
It opened in 1983.[1]
Closure[edit]
League tables for exam results were introduced in November 1992 to show failing schools, which Labour authorities had tolerated. Ofsted was created in 1993 for a similar purpose. Labour boroughs were warned that if a school continued to produce low results the school would close. The school closed in 1995.
Results[edit]
When school league tables were introduced in November 1992, it was at the bottom for England. No-one had five grades A-C at GCSE, and half had failed to get one GCSE.
Four schools in Liverpool had less than 5% obtaining five grades A-C at GCSE.[2]
Former building[edit]
On Friday 3 November 1995, vandals set fire to the derelict school. Merseyside firefighters were on strike at the time.[3]
Notable former pupils[edit]
- Carl Regan, right-back [4]
- Eddie Youds, defender
Cardinal Godfrey Technical High School[edit]
- Len McCluskey, trade unionist, General Secretary from 2011-2021 of Unite the Union
- Tommy Smith (footballer, born 1945), defender from 1962 to 1978 for Liverpool; he scored Liverpool's second goal in the 1977 European Cup Final
