Sardara Gill is a platinum selling Bhangra singer from Birmingham, West Midlands, England. He is a founding member of legendary band Apna Sangeet and past member of Bhujhangy Group.
Gill has been singing and performing for over 30 years making him one of the longest surviving acts of the modern era.
Bhujhangy Group[edit]
In 1979 he was invited to join a band known as Bhujhangy Group and spent a total of 4 years with the band. In late November 1983 Sardara and Kulwant Bhamra (another member of Bhujungy Group) had decided to form their own band.
Apna Sangeet[edit]
Apna Sangeet were a British Asian Bhangra band from Birmingham, England. group was formed in 1984 after successfully acquiring the services of some of the most talented musicians in the music industry including Sardara Gill, Kulwant Bhamra, Gurcharan Mall, Davinderpal Kalsi, Niki Patel and Arjinder Kang. They became quickly renowned for defining their music as traditional, yet original. In contrast to the more western sounds of contemporary groups like DCS, they played a very traditional style of bhangra with a dhol player centre stage.
In April 1984 the band was named 'APNA SANGEET' meaning 'OUR MUSIC'.
Apna Sangeet was nominated and elected as the best upcoming band in the 1986/87 UK Asian Pop Awards and then after releasing 2 of their biggest selling albums to date they won the Best Asian Band.
Apna Sangeet also succeeded in recording the first ever promotional music video, shown for the first time on the BBC in 1989, as well as being presented with 8 gold and platinum discs for outstanding sales of their 10 albums over a span of 12 years. They have firmly established themselves as purveyors of Bhangra, whilst carrying Bhangra music forward and will always be remembered and highly respected throughout the British Bhangra industry.
By 1994, the group had released nine albums and sold more than 2,000,000 records, and were awarded Best Bhangra Band by Movie International Magazine.
The Stage in 1995 described the group as a "superband...who are virtually unknown to non-Asians".
In 1996, Gill and Bhamra went on to form 'Apna Group'.
Over the years of being such an established singer/performer Sardara has been fortunate enough to be involved in over 40 tours which has enabled him to travel to places such as India, Canada, Kenya, Tanzania, Holland, Singapore, Malaysia, Sweden, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Norway and Turkey.
In addition to these achievements, Sardara has taken pride in 'Family Pride' where he performed in several of their key episodesas an extra, which led him to land a 'Walk On' role in 'The Boon'. This was a critical point in his career and he decided to dedicate all his time towards singing as opposed to acting.
In 2009, the band reunited for one charity show.[1][2] They also reformed for the 2014 Vaisakhi celebrations in Trafalgar Square, London, together with groups Heera and Premi.[3]
Apna Sangeet released a song in 2021 on the album Hope with Kiss Music.
