Numix (/n'umiks/ NOO-meex) is a popular artwork and theming project for the Linux desktop. The Numix Project describe Numix on their website as "a modern and stylish way to give your desktop a warm and jazzy feel."[1]
Art includes GTK themes, icon themes, wallpapers, and additionally a skinned version of the CyanogenMod calculator, a theme for Plank dock, a Conky theme in the style of Google Now, and art prints of the wallpapers.[1]
History
The Numix icons, originally made by Joern Konopka, was started in 2012 and were based on Nitrux which was and is a quite popular icon theme. The project officially started when Georgi Karavasilev, Paolo Rotolo and Satyajit Sahoo joined it. In the same year, they released a Gnome Shell theme and started working on a real GTK theme.
GTK Themes
The GTK theme was different from other themes. While it used flat elements, it also used shadows and roundness to give it some depth.
On March 19, 2013, the Numix GTK3 theme was officially released.[2] After this, a lot of people encouraged the team to make two variants of it: Numix Light and Numix Dark. Meanwhile, all Numix works were uploaded on a PPA for Ubuntu and other Linux based distributions.[3]
There are only 2 GTK themes available from the Numix Project website; however, in Antergos Linux Archived 2019-10-09 at the Wayback Machine there is an exclusive modification of the Numix-Light theme in which the accent colors have been changed from red to blue. Additionally, spin-off themes can be found in the GTK Themes section on the Numix deviantART group.
In May 2014, two spin-offs of the Numix GTK Theme were released: Numix Flat Dark and Numix Flat Light.[4]
Website
On September 30, 2013, the team bought the domain numixproject.org and made the official logo and logotypes. It was a big step for Numix as a brand.
Icon Themes
The original Numix icon theme was renamed to Numix Shine, and left unmaintained, while they focused on Numix Circle: a new circle based icon theme for Linux desktop.
After Circle release, on November 20, 2013,[5] the Numix Project started working on a squared icon theme (published on April 9, 2014).
Android
From summer 2014, Numix icon themes (Circle, Square, Hexagonal and Fold) are also available for Android.[6]
On August 7, 2014, a skinned version of the CyanogenMod calculator named "Numix Calculator" was released.
OzonOS
In April 2014, the Numix Project announced that it was working with Nitrux S.A. on a new Linux distribution: OzonOS.[7][8] The new Linux distribution will use GNOME apps and Gnome Shell and will target gamers (with Steam installed by default).
OzonOS extensions are currently under development and available on GitHub: https://github.com/ozonos.[9]
