Nusa Penida dialect

Nusa Penida dialect or locally also known as Basa Nosa is a dialect of Balinese language used by the Nusa Penidan people in Nusa Penida Island of Klungkung Regency. The Nusa Penida dialect is considered the most unique and strange dialect in Bali because most mainland Balinese speakers do not understand this dialect, as it is very different from other dialects on mainland Bali. Plus, many words from this dialect are not found in Balinese dictionaries.

Linguistically, Nusa Penida dialect is considered a dialect of Balinese, a Malayo-Polynesian and Bali-Sasak-Sumbawa languages under the Austronesian language family. The Nusa Penida dialect is close to the Bali Aga dialect, which is also a dialect of the Balinese language used by the Bali Aga people.

Distribution

Currently, the Nusa Penida dialect is only spoken as the main language in Nusa Penida Island, Klungkung. But this dialect is also spoken outside the island because many people from Nusa Penida become migrants in Indonesia, especially those who migrate to the southern and northern islands of Sumatra, especially Lampung, Palembang, and Medan. They are also often found as migrants in Sulawesi and East Indonesia. They still use the Nusa Penida dialect overseas, so this dialect is not threatened with extinction.

If in Balinese it is common to use "U" as the first word, then in Nusa Penida dialect the letter "U" is replaced and pronounced as "O". Also, the word "A" and "H" at the beginning are usually used more often, for example Homah, Kola, Obat, Poles, Hoba.
