Nyarugenge District Hospital, is a local health facility based in Kigali. The hospital is on a District level is the main health facility within the District. Between January-October 2021, the hospital served as a National referral Center for COVID-19. [1] [2] [3]

Background[edit]

Nyarugenge District Hospital is a modern 300-beds hospital that was launched by the Ministry of Health with the support of the Belgian Kingdom through Ubuzima Burambye Program and Nyarugenge District. [4] [5] [6] [7]

The hospital was established with the main purpose of bringing healthcare services closer to people who had to walk a long distance looking for health care services to other district hospitals within Kigali. It has served as a national referral center for COVID-19 between January-October 2021.

The two phase construction works of the hospital started on January 14, 2018 and was completed on July 22nd 2020, by the joint venture Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Horizon Construction Ltd. [8]

Phase I of the hospital construction, consisting of 120 Beds, have been completed and has been in operations since October 2020

The modern architectural design of the hospital was developed by MASS DESIGN GROUP, with compact and two to three stored buildings that offer high-quality features that make it a model for District hospitals in Rwanda

Phase I of the hospital consisted of constructing and equipping 120 beds with [9][10]

Reputation[edit]

On January 8, 2021, three months after the completion of the Hospital’s phase I, and by the time the country was having a high increase in  umber of COVID-19 infections, Rwanda Biomedical Center announced the Hospital would start serving as a referral Center for COVID-19. [12] [13] on November 2 of the same year, the hospital got reinstated back to being a normal District Hospital. [14]

The closing event of Nyarugenge District Hospital as a national referral center for COVID-19 was attended by the former Minister of Health, Dr. Daniel NGAMIJE and the Belgian former Deputy Prime Minister, Sophie WILMÈS. At the event, the expansion if the hospital was also announced. [15]
