o'summer vacation is a three-piece noise-punk band based in Kobe, Japan. The trio formed in 2010 and currently consist of members Ami (vocals), mikkki (bass) and Manu (drums).[1][2]
They have shared the stage with music greats like Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple), Yoshida Tatsuya (Ruins) and Green Milk From The Planet Orange from the Japanese underground scene, as well as supporting international acts like Czech post-punk band Už jsme doma.[3]
Biography[edit]
Forming in 2010, originally based in Kyoto, o'summer vacation has had a constantly shifting line-up, mikkki being the only persistent member.[4] The band's inception forming from bassist mikkki wanting to start a project with only the concept of "doing something weird".[3]
Bassist mikkki, vocalist Minami Yokota (of OOPS, LLRR)[5] and drummer Takaya Tani (of Otori, Worst Taste, LLRR) were the line-up as of 2015.[6] The band create their first EP, 7 minutes order, self-published in December 2015.[1]
mikkki and Yokota shared creative differences over o'summer vacation's future,[5] resulting in Yokota and Tani both leaving the band in September 2016, putting o'summer vacation on hiatus. The two form a band of their own the following year called LLRR.[7][8][9] In January of 2017, o'summer vacation return with new members Hama on drums and current vocalist Ami, joining bassist mikkki.[10] The new line up tour Canada for the first time later that year as part of the "Next Music From Tokyo" project. They tour 5 cities in Canada in October 2017.[5][11]
In 2018, the band recorded and released their first album, WICKED HEART. The album was recorded in one continuous take, reflecting their comfort and energy as a live band, a feeling that they wanted to express on the album.[12]
Drummer Hama leaves the band in June 2019, with current drummer Manu (of AstroAttack, Sol Distortion) joining the following month.[13]
The band signs with UK label Damnably (Shonen Knife, Otoboke Beaver) in 2021, re-releasing their debut album WICKED HEART.[14][15][12]
Musical Styles and Influences[edit]
The noise punk trio is a "combination of loop-pedal augmented intricate bass riffs, frenetic powerful drumming and dynamic soft to screamed vocals".[5] Bassist mikkki uses a wide array of FX pedals (whammy, ring modulator, looper, distortion, overdrive, delay, and switch) at his disposal to offer a dynamic range of sounds.[16][2][12]
The band cite bands like Ponytail, Cocteau Twins and UUVVWWZ as influences, which inspire their "meaningless lyrics and onomatopoeia".[12][16] The band further say they have been influenced by bands such as Boredoms, Melt Banana and Ruins.[12]
