The OTI Festival 1981 is the tenth edition of the OTI Festival which was held on December 5 at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, Mexico. It was presented by Raúl Velasco, who presented more than three times in the history of the festival.

Background

This year the first participation of the Valencian Francisco representing Spain stands out; also, the second foray of the Chilean Florcita Motuda, in her characteristic strambotic style.

The Portuguese José Cid, who returns to this festival after his appearance at OTI 1979 and then seventh place in Eurovision 1980. And as an anecdotal case, the representative of Netherlands Antilles, Efrem Benita, who, on this occasion, placed himself in a rather uninspiring position, twenty years later would win the first prize of the Eurovision festival representing his country of residence, Estonia, under the name Dave Benton with Estonian Tanel Padar.

Among the composers, the Mexican song was composed by Felipe Gil 'El Charro', who already composed 'La felicidad', the winning song of OTI 1975. On the other hand, the famous Argentine boleros composer Chico Novarro signed the score of his country's song.

For the final result, the triumph was taken by the Spanish theme song 'Latino', a great success of Francisco created by Herrero y Armenteros, followed by Argentina and, in a draw for the third prize, the Mexican and American songs. The United States was represented by Puerto Rican singer Aldo Matta, who represented his home country in the same contest eight years later.
