Odds Are... is a 2018 American thriller film directed by Peter Markle.

Plot[edit]

A group of friends play a challenge game called "Odds Are" but when Kelly enters a stranger's house during a dare she is taken captive. Her brother Ryan and his girlfriend Tracy seek to free her but are also targeted by the homeowner.

Cast[edit]

Production[edit]

The film is based on a story by Lily Markle. She learned about an actual incident in Eastern Europe where the game "Odds Are" took a dark turn. She and her father Peter Markle wrote a treatment, moving the events from Eastern Europe to California.[2][3]

The film was shot in 25 days under a Low Budget Agreement with SAG, the DGA and the WGA.[4]

Release[edit]

The film premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival[5] on March 3, 2018,[6] ahead of its VOD release on August 7, 2018.[2] In April of 2018 Peter Markle also presented the film at the 37th Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival in Minnesota, where he grew up and produced his first film, The Personals (1982). There he was honored with the 2018 Cinematic Arts Award.[7][8][9][10] Freestyle Digital Media distributed the film in the United States and Canada.[11] Devilworks acquired the rights to distribute the film internationally.[12]

Joe Pantoliano, who began his career working with Peter Markle, promoted the film on his Twitter account.[13]

Reception[edit]

Marcel Demuth of the German film review site Filmchecker gave the film a score of 5/10, writing that it "could have been horror in the style of DON'T BREATHE" but "ODDS ARE is far removed from the qualities of the aforementioned horror thriller."[14]

Kelly A. Harrison wrote that the "intense psychological thriller, Odds Are… has all the elements to scare you out of your seat."[15]

The film currently holds a user rating of 3.5 stars on Amazon.com.[16]
