Overview[edit]

Bowofoluwa Olufisayo Odunsi,[1] born June 7, 1996 and known professionally as Odunsi (The Engine), Odunsi, or Mr. Engine, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer, known for a fusion of pop, R&B, and Afrobeats and a seminal figure in the alté scene.[2] Both his 2018 debut album rare. and his 2020 follow-up EP EVERYTHING YOU HEARD IS TRUE hit No. 1 on the Apple Music charts in his native country, the former hitting No. 4 in Ghana as well. Signed to Universal Music Nigeria's debut roster of artists in 2018,[3] and with a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music UK,[4] he signed with RCA Records[5] in 2020.

Background and Early Life[edit]

Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, he grew up with his parents and four siblings in Omole on the mainland of Lagos.[6] He attended Dansol High School in Ikeja, then Halifield College in Maryland, Lagos.[7]

Music Career[edit]

Odunsi began his career as a producer in 2015.[8] His breakthrough came with a collaboration with his friend Cruel Santino, otherwise known as Santi.[9] He went on to work with artists such as Boogey,[10] Blackmagic, Adomaa, Cina (Julor),[11] King Zamir and Dami Oniru.

In 2016 he began his transformation from producer to artist. His single "Happy Hour (feat. Økuntakinte)" netted him a feature on MOBO as an artist to watch, and his single “Situationship (feat. AYLØ)” reached No. 5 on Spotify US's Top 10 viral tracks list.[12] In July he released his debut EP, Times of Our Lives (also styled TOOL).[11][13]

The following year he released “Desire” with Tay Iwar and Funbi, and the EP War in collaboration with singer Nonso Amadi.[14]

In October 2018 he released his debut album rare.[14] Tracks featured Davido, Runtown, Santi, Tay Iwar and others.[15] In 2019 he went on his first UK tour,[6]. The Native dubbed him the "Dark Prince of Afro-Pop,"[9] and he saw his biggest recording success up to that point, the single "Tipsy" with UK pop singer Raye.[2] As of February 2023, the video for the track had been streamed over 18 million times on Spotify.

In 2020 he released the seven-track EP EVERYTHING YOU HEARD IS TRUE, which one reviewer described as "a startlingly modern take on the R&B coming out of Nigeria"[16] and NPR's Sidney Madden named the No. 1 album of 2020.[17] It included appearances from several other artists from the alté scene – MAISON2500, Amaarae, Gigi Atlantis, DETO BLACK.[18]

In March 2020 Odunsi signed with RCA Records. The EP Denim,[19] released 14 September 2022,[20] was his debut on the label.

Music and Fashion[edit]

Odunsi (The Engine) has collaborated on a number of fashion projects. He provided music for the Mugler Spring/Summer 2022 campaign,[21] and his music was included in Mowalola Ogunlesi’s Burglar wear SS23 show in Paris.

Venturing into design himself, he collaborated with Mowalola Ogunlesi on an issue of Bricks Magazine[22] and on a New Balance shoe design that was released in 2022.[23]

Odunsi then scored the runway soundtrack, and was on the design team, for the SS23 Burglar Wear show.[24]
