OGONEK is the stage name of Bulgarian drum and bass DJ Valeri Sholevski.[1][2]

OGONEK is the stage name of Bulgarian drum and bass producer and DJ Valeri Sholevski.[3][4] He was active in Sofia's independent electronic music scene through the porno_BPM collective in the early 2000s and later worked with Ivan Shopov under the name Ogonek & Cooh.[3][4] Bulgarian music publications have retrospectively associated the duo with the early development of the country's drum-and-bass culture.[5][6]

Career

In September 2002, the Bulgarian music magazine Ritam published a full-page feature on the independent electronic music collective porno_BPM. The article identified Sholevski as Ogonek and discussed his sampling-based drum and bass production and influences from jazz, punk and trip hop.[3] A 2011 retrospective published by MySound.bg reported that Sholevski, KiNK, KEi, SuB and Zenk had organised events and produced original electronic music through porno_BPM from 2001, with the aim of developing an independent identity for Sofia's club scene.[7]

A September 2005 article by Ivan Zhikov in Tema Sport identified Sholevski and Shopov as Ogonek & Cooh. The publication described them as Bulgaria's leading drum and bass duo, reported that they had begun releasing singles through British and Austrian record labels, and credited them as contributors to the development of Bulgaria's drum-and-bass scene.[4] In an interview published later that year in Intro Club & Shopping Guide, Sholevski said that he had begun producing drum and bass in 1998 and subsequently started working with Shopov.[8]

A performance review published by Avtora.com in 2005 singled out an Ogonek & Cooh set consisting mainly of original material and described an enthusiastic audience response.[9] In February 2006, the same publication covered the duo's live performance at Sofia's Hristo Botev Hall, where they followed British producer Spor and were joined by a bassist, a saxophonist and Boyan, vocalist of the Bulgarian nu metal band Kuln.[10]

In 2009, Dnes.bg reported that Sholevski and Danail Iliev had formed the record label Metafiziq Recordings and released its debut double EP, Missing Particle, featuring Bulgarian, French and Spanish artists.[11]

Under the name OGONEK, Sholevski composed the music for the Bulgarian science-fiction short film Sunless, which was presented in Sofia in 2013.[12] He was also credited with music, sound recording and audio processing for the Bulgarian literary audio series До последен зъб.[13]

Retrospective coverage later placed Ogonek & Cooh within the history of Bulgarian drum and bass. In 2016, the editorial introduction to a feature in the Bulgarian arts magazine VIJ! described them as active participants in the movement that helped establish drum and bass culture in Bulgaria and recalled their performances in Sofia's underground clubs.[5] In 2019, MySound.bg described their live band as one of the significant phenomena in the early development of Bulgarian electronic music and characterised its performances as part of Bulgarian drum-and-bass history.[6]
