Oil and Gas News magazine (known as OGN in the industry) is a reputed print and online trade publication that serves the energy industry. It is published by Al Hilal Group, one of the Middle East's leading publishing and marketing organisations, based in Bahrain.

OGN was started in 1984 and has been published for over 30 years without disruption, even surviving the Gulf War in 1992. The weekly edition was consolidated as a monthly in 2017. Currently, the magazine is distributed within the GCC region and worldwide from its base in Bahrain.

The magazine has a monthly print run with and a significant presence online. The online edition receives over 60,000 visitors every month. The OGN team also publishes a daily newsletter that reaches nearly 150,000 readers everyday, in addition to several thousand news alerts across all of its social media platforms.

History[edit]

The first edition of OGN was published in 1984. The weekly magazine of 12 pages covered Southeast Asia and the GCC. It was printed in Singapore by Al Hilal Publishing (Far East) and that's where its editorial team was based as well. It was distributed on a strictly-controlled circulation basis to senior management and decision makes principally throughout Southeast Asia's oil and gas industries. The magazine had correspondents spread throughout the region and included those in Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Japan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Australia. It also had several representative offices in Australia, the United Kingdom, Bahrain, USA, and Greece.

Sister publication[edit]

For Middle East coverage, Al Hilal Publishing Bahrain simultaneously published ArabEnergy, a monthly magazine that had established itself as a major medium for the region's industry in terms of news, features and advertising. ArabEnergy was printed by Express Printing Services in Dubai, the UAE.

The two titles merged into OGN to provide insights to the energy sector to the joint target audience in 1986.

Circulation[edit]

OGN has a monthly print run of 8,500 copies, with additional copies printed for distribution during major energy industry trade events.

Online[edit]

OGN's online presence is growing at a rapid pace. On August 1, 2020, the magazine got a revamped website[1].

Style[edit]

Outlook[edit]

The scope and coverage of OGN is very wide. It covers all aspects of the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors including refined products, petrochemicals, chemicals, renewables and power generation. OGN provides a unique insight into these key industry sectors covering the GCC and the international energy markets.

Taglines[edit]

OGN's tagline has continued to evolve to represent its coverage area and focus. This evolution is evident of the magazine's alertness of the energy sector's every changing landscape.

1985: Asia’s First Petroleum Weekly
May 1986: The Petroleum Industry Weekly
June 1986: The Petroleum Industry Weekly for Asia / Pacific / Middle East October
2016: The Energy Industry’s Weekly for the GCC
May 2017 (to date): The Energy Industry’s Journal for the Middle East

Writing[edit]

OGN is written in British English and is very flexible as far as style is concerned. Articles can be opinion or leading that discuss problems in a particular industry segment and solutions to them. Case studies are also a preferred way of writing, as are interviews, which provide in-depth information and are authoritative.

All articles are subject to editorial approval, and are edited to OGN style and policy.

Size[edit]

OGN is easily recognised from its A3 size. It is the only magazine in the industry and category of this size. This serves as a big advantage for advertisers, whose advertisements are twice the size of standard industry magazines.

Sections[edit]

OGN covers a broad range of topics in the energy industry. It publishes country reviews and corporate reports every month. Its prized and largest edition of the year is Saudi Aramco Review3. Features that have gained traction include 'Digitalisation' and 'Energy Goes Green'. A wide range of features are thoughtfully interspersed throughout the year to cover all segments in the industry. A monthly edition has, at least, three essential features, in addition to the country or corporate reports.

Cover[edit]

The typical OGN doesn't have a front cover unlike other magazines in the industry. Its front page opens to the lead story, and the respective edition's cover is in the first 5 pages. However, since 2020, OGN has been experimenting with front covers.

Advertising[2][edit]

OGN publishes colour print advertisements in several sizes. A full page is 42cm x 29cm and is divided into 7 equal columns for advertisement size calculation purposes. The advertisement sizes include:

  • Double Page Spread: 42cm x 58cm
  • Full Page: 42cm x 29cm
  • Half Page (Vertical): 40cm x 15.5cm (4 columns)
  • Half Page (Vertical): 40cm x 11.5cm (3 columns)
  • Half Page (Hoizontal): 20cm x 27.5cm (7 columns)
  • Half Page (Solus): 28cm x 19.5cm (5 columns)
  • Quarter Page (Solus): 20cm x 15.5cm (4 columns)
  • Quarter Page (Vertical): 20cm x 11.5cm (3 columns)
  • Earpiece: 4.5cm x 10cm

Editor[edit]

Abdulaziz Khattak is the current editor of OGN[3]. He is the first Bahraini to lead a major English trade journal in the country and the youngest to take that position. He took over as editor in December 2019 at the age of 40. Khattak brings with him nearly 20 years of newspaper and magazine experience. He has previously worked for Gulf Construction magazine (OGN's sister publication for the construction and real estate sectors), the Gulf Daily News (OGN's sister daily), and The Gulf Today (Sharjah, UAE). Khattak holds an MBA degree from the Arab Open University's Bahrain Branch and speaks multiple languages. He is also a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers' Bahrain chapter and serves as its Publication Communication and Publications Officer[4].
