Flash is a Japanese photo magazine published by Kobunsha, published every Tuesday.[1][2]

The first issue was published on November 5, 1986.[3][4][2]

The editorial office is in Otowa [ja], Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo.[2]

History[edit]

In the early 1980s, major Japanese publishers started to publish weekly photo magazines one after another, such as Shinchosha's Focus established in 1981, and their sales grew rapidly.[5][6]

Around 1989, competition between the Friday and Flash led to combined sales of over four million copies.[6]

But illegal methods of shooting and the privacy of photographed people became issues, and the boom period of photo magazines was over. By 2009, there remained only two major weekly photo magazines, Friday and Flash.[6]

A supplementary bimestrial magazine, Flash EX, which had gained popularity owing to its rich content such as columns and rare photographs on 2000's, suspended publication in October 2008.[6][7]

Flash provided political news and gossip but also treated sexual topics. Around year 2009, convenience store's self-regulation and the designation of harmful publication by Tokyo Metropolitan Government grow more rigorous.[6]

The growth of internet media diffused more radical pornographic information and illegal reprinting of magazines, and it overwhelmed the magazine.[6]
