Okezue Bell (born 25 April 2006) is a Nigerian American inventor, scientist and engineer, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) promoter. Okezue is the founder of Fidutam, a product that uses fingerprint scanning on a 2G smartphone to create a unique blockchain-wallet for unbanked individuals. His innovation was featured by the NASDAQ Center for Entrepreneurship and the Taco Bell Foundation's Ambition Accelerator.[1][2][3][4] Okezue is also known for his invention of a low-cost prosthetic arm for individuals with below-the-elbow amputations.[5][6][7]

Work[edit]

Okezue currently lives in Easton, Pennsylvania where he attends Moravian Academy Upper School.[8] He is currently conducting research at the Boston Children's Hospital's Engle Lab, as 1 of 81 students named a Research Science Institute (RSI) Scholar[9][10].

He is also a research student at the MIT Media Lab[11] and at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, where he conducts research on signal processing, machine learning, and neurology.[12] Bell advises several companies on sustainability, such as Perfect Day, where he is on an advisory board alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, David R. Stukus, and Dariush Mozzaffarian.[13][14][15]

In 2021, Okezue was inducted into the Masason Foundation by Masayoshi Son, CEO of Softbank Group Corporation, and was given access to exclusive grants and funding opportunities, the Shibuya Infinity building in Tokyo, and a professional network.[16]

Bell's prosthetic innovation won a 2nd Place Grand Prize and the INCOSE Bill-Ewald Socio-Technical Systems Special Award at the 2022 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).[17] He also won the 1st place award in engineering at the 2022 National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS). [18][19][20]In 2022, he was named the International BioGENEius Challenge Grand Prize Winner,[21][22][23][24] and a recipient of the Spirit of Ramanujan mathematics award.[25] He was also named a 2022 World Science Scholar in their 1st cohort.[26] In 2021, won first place at the DECA International Career Development Conference in 2021.[27][28] In 2020, Okezue was also a finalist for the Congressional App Challenge.[29] Okezue enjoys playing the violin, and has performed at Carnegie Hall. He is also an avid tennis player.[30]

Okezue spoke at Web Summit in 2021 on regulation in blockchain technology and decentralized finance.[31] At the conference, he played chess against Grandmaster Garry Kasparov.[32]

Research[edit]

Genetic Algorithms[edit]

In 2020 and 2021, Okezue conducted research on studying Gaussian mutation in genetic algorithms and its effect on the self-adaptive behavior of such algorithms, as well as its application in solving optimization problems. His work is now listed as a preprint and undergoing the review process.[33]
