Okta is a company that provides a cloud-based identity management service.[1] The company is based in San Francisco, CA.[2] Okta has more than 1,500 enterprise customers.[3] In June 2014, Gartner positioned Okta as a leader for Identity and Access Management.[4] Vendors in the Magic Quadrant provide identity governance and administration, access including user authentication, single sign-on (SSO) and authorization enforcement, as well as intelligence.[5]

Services[edit]

Okta provides directory services, single sign-on, authentication, provisioning, workflow, and built-in reporting.[6] Okta allows IT departments to manage access across any application,[7] person or device and makes information more secure.[8] End users can access all of their applications with one password using Okta’s single sign-on service.[9] By reducing the time needed to access applications and information, employees can increase productivity.[10] The IT department is able to increase security, reduce costs, receive insights to their users’ activity and decrease the amount of time it takes to set up or remove a user.[10] Okta also provides customers access to the Okta Application Network (OAN),[11] a catalog of 3,000 pre-integrated and community-generated multi-tenant applications.[12]

History[edit]

Okta was founded in 2009 by Todd McKinnon and Frederic Kerrest.[13] McKinnon left his position as Salesforce.com’s overall head of engineering in 2009 to start Okta.[14] He recognized that companies were no longer skeptical of cloud applications and decided to build a central location to manage them.[15] Joined by Kerrest, the two sought to help companies adopt cloud applications quickly and confidently.[16] Okta received its first round of funding in July 2010, led by Andreessen Horowitz for $10 million. Okta closed an additional $16.5 million in a Series B round with Greylock Partners and Khosla Ventures in August 2011.[17] In December 2012, Okta raised $25 million in a Series C, in order to compete against and displace older legacy systems.[18] In September 2013, Okta announced its expansion into Europe, fueled by a Series D funding round of $27 million led by Sequoia Capital.[19] On June 9, 2014, Okta announced it raised $75 million in a Series E round of funding, which was also led by Sequoia Capital.[3] With this funding, Okta established a presence in the Australian market in Spring 2014.[20]
