Ola Oresanya is a Nigerian environmentalist with over 37 years working experience in solid waste management. He is a consultant to the Federal and several State Governments in areas of environment and Waste Management.[6] Oresanya has held several positions in Nigeria, including Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA),[7] he was a special Adviser on Environment to Governor Dapo Abiodun and commissioner for Environment in Ogun State. He is the Co-founder/CEO of Globetech Remedial Ltd. [8]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Oresanya, a native of Ogun State, was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria in 1961. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Geology from the University of Ibadan, and Master's degree in Environmental Management and Ecology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. Ola is an alumnus of the Mercyside Polytechnic (Now Liverpool John Moores University), Liverpool, United Kingdom, where he obtained a post graduate diploma in Business Management. He also attended Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University, Massachusetts, U.S.A, where he completed an executive education program and gained additional expertise in environmental management.[9]

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA)[edit]

Oresanya was appointed MD/CEO of LAWMA from May 2005 to August 2015. After serving for 10 years, he resigned from his position on July 7, 2015. He was re-appointed again by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the second time (December 2018 to July 2019).[10] [11][12] [13] [14]

Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA)[edit]

Oresanya was appointed CEO of OGWAMA in 2019.[15] [16]

Special Adviser and commissioner for Environment, Ogun State[edit]

Oresanya served as a Special Adviser to the Governor of Ogun State on Environmental Matters and Commissioner for Environment from 2019 to 2022. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the environmental management and development strategies of the state.[17] .[18][19] [20]

Other positions[edit]

Oresanya is a consultant with the United Nations (UN) Habitat on sustainable waste management services in Nigeria. He was a member of the design review team for the Keele Valley Landfill Site in Ontario, Canada, and he supervised the World Bank-sponsored Lagos Landfill Site Design and Construction Project. Oresanya is also a part-time lecturer in waste management and toxicology at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and he is a visiting lecturer in environmental geology at the University of Lagos.[21] [22] [23]

Awards and recognitions[edit]

Oresanya has received numerous awards and honors for his work in waste management and environmental development. These include:

  • The Daily Trust Award for "The Man Who Cleaned Up Lagos" in October 2011.
  • The Environmental Crusader Award at the 6th Edition of the Environment Outreach Public Lecture, which took place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos in September 2015.
  • An award at the Africa Clean Up Conference in Lagos, Nigeria in July 2016.[24] [25] [26]

Membership[edit]

Oresanya is a member of the[27] Nigerian Mining and Geo-Science Society (MNMGS),[9] the Nigerian Environmental Society (MNES), and the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON).[28] He has also served as the Chairman of the Technical Working Committee on Medical Waste Management in Lagos. [29]

Ola served as the West African Regional Coordinator for Technical Working Committee on Medical Waste Management in ECOWAS sub-region, he was elected as board Chairman, Extended Producers Responsibility Organization of Nigeria (EPRON), and he also a board Member of Recycling Association of Nigeria (RAN).[30]
