Oleg Andreevich Kalabekov (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is a Russian engineer-inventor, researcher, and entrepreneur whose work focuses on safety and security in railway transport.[1]
Kalabekov holds a Master's Degree from Baltic State Technical University and a Bachelor's Degree from Bauman Moscow State Technical University and is a long-time resident of Saint Petersburg.
Kalabekov co-founded the research-and-production company NPK «Avtomatizatsiya».[2][3]
Career
Kalabekov entered business in the late perestroika period. The Unified State Register of Legal Entities records that research-and-production cooperative NPK «Avtomatizatsiya» was incorporated in January 1989 in Leningrad; Kalabekov was a founder, director and later board member until 2023, when control passed to new management.[3] A 2010 open letter in the independent review Lebed names him commercial director of the firm and notes growing public interest in its scientific work.[4]
During the 2000s, Kalabekov and his engineers pivoted toward railway safety. Between 2004 and 2025, he was listed as author or co-author on more than forty Russian and Eurasian patents covering automated clearance-gauge measurement, wagon-number recognition and dynamic axle-load weighing; examples include RU 2735809 C1 (2020) and RU 2764816 C1 (2022).[5][6]
In 2018, a sister company, PIK «Progress», began piloting a modular 3-D commercial inspection system (АСКО ПВ 3.0) for Russian Railways. Railway daily Gudok reported in November 2019 that the prototype completed field tests, creating full 3-D models of passing wagons and pinpointing out-of-gauge loads, thereby cutting manual inspection time.[7] Trade journal Пульт управления and the control-systems portal ISUP later highlighted PIK «Progress» products based on Kalabekov’s patents, noting integration with the firm’s own “Kosmotronika” software stack.[8][9] At the 2025 Russian International Energy Forum in Saint Petersburg, the company unveiled “Integral-325,” a telemetry platform that merges metering, SCADA and asset-management; industry press again credited PIK «Progress», and by implication its chief technologist, Kalabekov for the launch.[10]
Beyond rolling-stock diagnostics, Kalabekov has interests in IP leasing; he has been a registered individual since 2019 in the category “rent of intellectual property other than copyright.”[11]
Personal life
Kalabekov resides in Saint Petersburg.[12][3] He lectures on environmentally oriented filtration technologies, delivered pro bono to students and early-career researchers.[2]
Awards and recognition
Gudok described the АСКО ПВ 3.0 complex as an "innovative system" singled out by the Russian Railways innovation board when it entered service in 2019, and the technology has since been rolled out on more than thirty-nine inspection points.[13][14]
Selected inventions
