The following is a list of unproduced Oliver Stone projects in roughly chronological order. During his long career, American film director Oliver Stone has worked on several projects which never progressed beyond the pre-production stage under his direction. Some of these projects fell in development hell, were officially canceled, were in development limbo or would see life under a different production team.

1980s[edit]

Demolished Man film[edit]

During the 1980's, Stone wrote a screenplay adaptation of Alfred Bester's sci-fi novel The Demolished Man, but it didn't become a film because of technical limitations and Stone's busy writer-director schedule.[1]

1990s[edit]

Elektra: Assassin film[edit]

On December 8, 1992, Stone was attached to direct the film adaptation of the Marvel Comicslimited series of the same name, which was eventually adapted as Elektra (2005).[2]

Martha Mitchell biopic[edit]

On September 5, 1993, Stone became attached as producer on Diane Ladd’s biopic of socialite Martha Mitchell, with Ladd set to direct and portray Mitchell.[3]

Manuel Noriega biopic[edit]

In November 1993, Stone was set to direct a biopic of Manuel Noriega and film it in Panama.[4][5][6] On May 28, 1994, Stone cancelled his planned biopic of Manuel Noriega, which Al Pacino was set to portray Noriega.[7]

Return to the Planet of the Apes[edit]

Mission Impossible 2[edit]

In 1996, Stone was the first choice to direct Mission: Impossible 2, but Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga talked with Tom Cruise to reject Stone’s story, and John Woo ended up directing the sequel.[8]

Bert Kreischer biopic The Machine[edit]

In 1997, Stone acquired the film rights to make a film based on Bert Kreischer’s trip to Russia. The film was eventually released on May 26, 2023 as The Machine, directed by Peter Atencio and with Stone no longer involved in the project.[9][10][11]

Scud: The Disposable Assassin film[edit]

In 1997, Stone’s company optioned the rights to Rob Schrab's science fiction comic Scud: The Disposable Assassin, with an eye towards adapting it into a film, but the rights lapsed.[12]

American Psycho film[edit]

Marching Into Valhalla film[edit]

On October 19, 1998, Stone was once attached to direct and produce the film adaptation of Michael Blake’s biography of General George Custer Marching Into Valhalla for New Line Cinema with Brad Pitt possibly attached to star, after Kathryn Bigelow left the movie.[13][14]

2000s[edit]

The Fountainhead remake[edit]

In the 2000’s, Stone wanted to remake The Fountainhead with Brad Pitt as Howard Roark.[15]

A Star Is Born remake[edit]

On September 15, 2000, Stone was attached to remake A Star is Born for Warner Bros., with Jamie Foxx attached to star, and Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah[16] and Mariah Carey[17] rumored to play the female lead. Stone left the project and Bradley Cooper would ultimately direct and star in the remake, which was released in theatres in 2018.[18]

Margaret Thatcher biopic[edit]

On December 2, 2004, Stone expressed interest in directing a biopic of Margaret Thatcher.[19][20]

Pinkville[edit]

In August 2007, Stone was set to direct the film Pinkville, based on an investigation of the My Lai massacre for MGM, with Stone co-writing the screenplay with Mikko Alanne and Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Woody Harrelson, and Michael Pena rounding out the cast, but the movie halted production due to the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike.[21][22][23] On December 30, 2010, Stone restarted the movie with Shia LaBeouf set as the only actor to star in the film.[24] There have been no further announcements since.

2010s[edit]

The Deep Blue Good-by film adaptation[edit]

On March 31, 2010, Stone was in talks to direct the film adaptation of The Deep Blue Good-by with Leonardo DiCaprio set to star and produce for 20th Century Fox,[25] but was replaced by Paul Greengrass[26] and James Mangold,[27] until Fox cancelled the film.[28]

Still Holding TV series[edit]

On April 30, 2010, Stone was set to produce the television series adaptation Bruce Wagner’s novel Still Holding for Epix.[29]

Memphis movie musical[edit]

On May 12, 2010, Stone was interested in directing the film adaptation of Joe DiPietro and David Bryan’s stage musical Memphis with Justin Timberlake as Stone’s choice to star as Huey Calhoun instead of Zac Efron.[30] On October 14, 2012, The Mark Gordon Company, Alcon Entertainment and Belle Pictures acquired the rights to adapt the stage musical without Stone’s involvement.[31]

FX conspiratorial thriller series[edit]

On March 25, 2011, Stone was confirmed to direct and produce Adam Gibgot’s conspiracy theory focused TV series through Richard Branson’s Virgin Produced company for FX.[32]

The Power Broker[edit]

In October 2011, Stone was set to direct and produce the film The Power Broker, a biopic about Robert Moses for HBO, with Peter Guber and James Gandolfini producing the movie and Nicholas Meyer writing the screenplay.[33]

Martin Luther King Jr. biopic[edit]

On October 10, 2013, Stone was interested in directing a Martin Luther King Jr. with Jamie Foxx portraying MLK Jr. for DreamWorks and Warner Bros..[34] On January 17, 2014, Stone left the project after MLK Jr’s estate disapproved the portrayal of MLK’s extramarital affairs, which was the reason Paul Greengrass’ proposed biopic Memphis was also canceled.[35]

Showtime Guantanamo series[edit]

On May 22, 2017, Stone was confirmed to direct a two-hour long pilot to Daniel Voll’s Guantanamo Bay TV series through Weinstein Television,[36] which was acquired by Showtime on July 13, 2017,[37] and later in October 2017, Stone and Showtime dropped out of the series in the wake of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual abuse scandal, stating they would not proceed with the series if The Weinstein Company was still involved.[38][39]

Offers[edit]

Hernan Cortes historical epic[edit]

In 1988, Stone was offered to direct "Cortes," a historical epic about Hernan Cortes from a Nicholas Kazan screenplay and with Edward R. Pressman producing, but he turned it down and Kazan & Pressman couldn't get the movie funded.[1]

J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic[edit]

In 2023, Stone was offered to make a biopic based on J. Robert Oppenheimer, but praised Oppenheimer directed by Christopher Nolan.[40]
