Oliver John ("Ollie") Kendal (born on the 16th of November, 1987) is a British YouTuber, video creator, and videographer based out of London, England. Kendal married Lizzie Kendal in 2020 and together they have a daughter named Juno (born September 2017).

Kendal is the co-creator and co-host of the YouTube channels Jolly and Korean Englishman (영국남자) alongside his best friend, Joshua "Josh" Carrott. Together, they have won several awards such as the Korea Image Stepping Stone Bridge Award in 2019 by Corea Image Communication Institute (CICI)) and the Solo Contents Creator of the Year from the Brand of the Year Awards in 2017.[1][2][3] They incorporated KENDAL & CARROTT LTD. in 2013.[4]

Background[edit]

Kendal attended SOAS University of London, which was where he first met Carrott. According to Carrott in an interview with Eric Nam for DIVE Studios, Kendal walked up to him "out of the blue quite confidently" and asked to be his friend.[5] Kendal mentioned in the same interview that while receiving his art degree, he had a "creative void" and decided to create videos with Josh who was also interested in the field, leading to the formation of their YouTube channel. Kendal married Lizzie Kendal in 2020 and together they have a daughter named Juno (born September 2017), who makes several appearances on their channels.[6]

Kendal's family members often guest in his videos. His father, Henry Kendal, has been featured on both of their YouTube channels regularly. On Korean Englishman he visited Korea with Kendal and Carrott and on Jolly he is regularly brought on try different foods and to also explore the slang and memes of the internet. Kendal's brother-in-law, Reverend Christopher Lee, has a series where he reacts to memes and music videos on Jolly. He has also made appearances on Korean Englishman with his twin brother, Major Charles Lee. He become more popular through his "60-second sermons" online during the pandemic[7][8], even getting interviewed on This Morning and Good Morning Britain.[9][10] His wife, Jenny, has also made multiple appearances, reacting and giving advice on posts on the internet. It was mentioned that Lizzie designed the sets of their videos.[11]

YouTube Channels[12][edit]

Korean Englishman[edit]

The two created their first YouTube channel, "Korean Englishman", on August 10, 2013 and made their first video titled "Englishman who is good at Korean + pig: Intro".[13] Their channel soon garnered attention as they continued to spread Korean culture to the rest of the world. They have covered videos about the Korean education system, asking experts and native English speaking students to take the English portion of the Suneung, sparking conversations for reforming the exam.[14] Their videos tend to focus more on introducing Korean cuisine to other people, however. "Food is just one of the easiest ways to introduce a culture to someone," Kendal explained in a press interview in 2019, "...there are barriers to interacting, whereas if you eat the same food, even if you can‘t speak the same language, you’re speaking the language of food."[15] They introduced various types of Korean food to British citizens such as Korean fried chicken and the infamous Buldak noodles; the latter video, which was released in 2014, sparked the viral "Fire Noodle Challenge" which numerous content creators posted their reactions to eating the noodles.[16] They became more popular for introducing Korean cuisine to celebrities all around the world, such as cast members of "Avengers: Infinity War", the cast of "Kingsman", and players of Tottenham Hotspur.[15][2][17] They opened their own Korean toast street restaurant in London in a magazine kiosk in 2021 after falling in love with the food when Kendal visited Korea to meet with Carrott in 2008.[18]

JOLLY[edit]

The duo created their second channel, Jolly, in 2017. In contrast to their main channel, the duo are more laid back and explore different topics together, sometimes accompanied by different content creators. The debuting video was titled “🇰🇷 FASTEST trick to learn KOREAN?!” where Kendal is seen receiving language lessons in Korean for the first time.[19] This concept went on to become a main series on the channel, collecting up to 35 videos ranging from 2017 - 2020. In 2021, the channel released a video titled “I secretly wrote & published my best friend’s autobiography (lol, I actually did tho)” where it was revealed that Kendal wrote this autobiography with the help of some close friends for Josh Carrott's 33rd birthday.[20] The book was titled Once Upon A Time In Carrotland: My YouTube Autobiography Which I Definitely Wrote All Of. As of September 2022, the book has 919 reviews on Amazon and has an average rating of 4.9 out of 5.
