On the First is an American Football side-betting game based on baseball's On the Mound (aka Moundball). It has a simple rule-set, which can be modified however one likes. The game is turn-based, with the goal being holding the pot when a touchdown is scored.
Playing the Game[edit]
At the start of the game, each player places their ante into the pot. The game begins at the start of the first quarter, with the player closest to the aisle holding the pot. Every time a first down is achieved, the pot moves to the next player (hence the name of the game), away from the aisle, in a cycle.
If a touchdown OR a safety is scored, the player holding the pot is declared the winner, and collects all money. Also, whoever is holding the pot when the game ends wins.
If a player is not in his or her seat during a score, they forfeit their chance to win. It is each player's sole responsibility to pay attention to the results on their own particular turn.
Field Goals[edit]
When a successful field goal is scored, the money in the pot carries over, as in a skins game in golf, and each player must add more money to the cup.
Turnovers[edit]
In the event of a turnover (a fumble recovery or interception), the pot changes direction. Think a reverse card in Uno.
Note a turnover on downs or punt is considered a new first down, not a turnover, and does not cause a change in direction.
i.e. A pick-six would cause a change in direction, then the person who just gained possession would win, because they are holding the pot when the touchdown occurs.
Moving to the Next Game[edit]
Whenever the pot is won, the game can be restarted, again starting at the person on the aisle.
Big Money Variation (Omaha)[edit]
To help increase the pot, players can choose to add money for a visiting team touchdown, rather than awarding the pot.
