Onawa L. (Lacy) Haynes, Esq. is a Native American (Navajo/Mescalero Apache) social entrepreneur, attorney, and former beauty queen from Gamerco, New Mexico who competed in the Miss USA pageant.

Background[edit]

Onawa grew up in Gamerco, NM with her parents Rodney and Rena Lacy and is one of three children.[1] Onawa and her husband, Zack, married in 2015 and have two children.

Onawa graduated from Gallup High School in 2000; received her Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Native American Studies from the University of New Mexico in 2007; and her JD from the University of New Mexico School of Law in May 2012. Onawa is licensed to practice law in New Mexico and was sworn into the NM State Bar in April 2014.

Onawa is a former beauty queen having held the titles of Miss Indian New Mexico 2001-2002, Miss Indian World 2003–2004,[2] and Miss New Mexico USA 2006.

Onawa competed for the title of Miss USA in Baltimore, MD on April 21, 2006. As part of the Miss USA 2006 media tour, Onawa appeared on NBC's hit game show Deal or No Deal as briefcase model #15; MTV's Total Request Live; Fox New's Dayside; NBC's Today show; LIVE! with Regis and Kelly, and The Morning Show.

Onawa is the founder and CEO of Hozhonigo Consulting LLC providing grant support services and project management for tribes and indigenous-led nonprofits.

In 2023, Onawa was selected alongside 9 other BIPOC women-led organizations working to close the racial wealth gap by the Common Future accelerator.
