Oneal Cleaven Sandidge (born August 13, 1955) is an American Christian educator, scholar, and author known for his contributions nationally to Christian education in the 20th and 21st centuries. He follows the Christian faith in the Baptist tradition. Sandidge was a former pastor of Baptist churches. He also served as the Director of Christian Education in a prominent New York church, where he became the first known full-time salaried director in a black New York City church. He also served as dean of religion at Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock.[1]

He served as the guest visiting editor for the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, focusing on Christian education for the 21st century.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Sandidge was born in Lynchburg, Virginia.[3] He has been an active Christian since childhood. He became a member of the Timothy Baptist Church in Amherst County, VA at the age of twelve and has been involved in various church activities, including organizing a youth Helping Hands Club and a gospel choir. During his teenage years, he became an American Red Cross First-Aid and CPR instructor and was actively engaged in the Amherst, Virginia N.A.A.C.P., working on the education committee for equal rights.[1]

Sandidge developed strong writing skills under the guidance of Dr. James Campbell at Lynchburg College. In 1980, he completed his research at Howard University in Virginia under the guidance of Dr. Cain Hope Felder. At Drew University, he found inspiration from Dr. Marian Poindexter in the field of religion. He later attented the Merrill Fellow's Program at Harvard University. He did his PhD studies at Capella University under mentors Dr. Marsha Covington and Dr. Lowe from Erskine Seminary.[2]

Contributions to Christian education[edit]

Sandidge was the pastor of Baptist churches in Virginia for eleven years.[1][3]

Sandidge is a Harvard Fellow and an Alumnus Volunteer Admissions Interviewer for Harvard University.[4]

His published works, including "Strategies for the Director of Christian Education" and "Teacher Training," have received high acclaim. Scholars like Charles Foster, Marshall Johnson, Michael Battle, Maria Harris, and Gloria Taylor have praised his books for their practicality and insightful perspectives.[1]
