Onoe Kikugorō VII(born October 2, 1942) is a Japanese Kabuki, film, television actor. He is the current and the seventh holder of the traditional Onoe Kikugorō name. His Yagō is Otowaya. His Jōmon (iconic Mon (emblem)) is "Kasane Ōgi ni Daki Gashiwa"(Folding oak leaf in stacking fans) and the alternative Mon is "Yotsuwa"(four circles)[2]. He is a Member of the Japan Art Academy and Living National Treasure of Japan(Ningen Kokuhō) as he has the individual certification of Kabuki(Tachiyaku)[2].

His real name (legal name) is Hideyuki Terajima. His spouse is Sumiko Fuji. He has two children. One is famous movie star Shinobu Terajima and the other is his successor Onoe Kikunosuke V

biography & personality[edit]

In his twenties age with the name "Onoe Kikunosuke IV", he achieved significant popularity as a part of "Sannosuke" (Three actors who has "nosuke" in their names; Ichikawa Shinnosuke (VI), Onoe Kikunosuke(V) and Onoe Tatsunosuke(I))[3]. He played the main role of NHK Taiga drama as youngest age on the time on Minamoto no Yoshitsune (TV series). He later married with Sumiko Fuji who co-played Yoshitsune's mistress Shizuka Gozen on the drama. He used to act Onnagata mainly, but as he adds the years he gains his masculine and came to take part of Tachiyaku mainly[4].

Onoe Kikugorō VII is the modern Kabuki's star, common for Onoe family's Sewamono plays, especially the greatest ever when he plays small-time crook of Edo[4]. He presides the Kabuki theater company "Onoe Kikugorō Gekidan (Onoe Kikugorō Company., or the Kikugoro troupe[5])" for handing down the traditions of Edo Kabuki as his life work[2].

Currently, he was working with deceased Nakamura Kichiemon II to take care of their grand child Onoe Ushinosuke VII (Kazufumi Terajima) to grow up him as a Kabuki actor. (Kichiemon was the father of the spouse of Kikunosuke V.)

  • 1965 May Succeeded the name Onoe Kikunosuke as fourth, with playing Jūrō in "Kotobuki Soga no Taimen"(『寿曽我対面』) and the others in Kabuki-za[2][5].
  • 1966 Taiga drama Minamoto no Yoshitsune (TV series) main role[5].
  • 1972 main role (co-starred with Yuki Meguro) on "Yaji kita Onmitsu Dōchū"(『弥次喜多隠密道中』) Married with Sumiko Fuji who co-starred in Yoshitsune. Their daughter Shinobu born.
  • 1973 October - November Succeeded the name Onoe Kikugorō as seventh, with playing 'Benten Kozō' Kikunosuke on "Benten Musume Meo no Shiranami"(『弁天娘女男白浪』), Shirabyoshi Hanako on "Kyōganoko Musume Dōjōji"(『京鹿子娘道成寺』) and the others[2][5].
  • 1977 eldest son Kazuyasu (later Onoe Kikunosuke V) born.
  • 2000 become a Member of the Japan Art Academy[5]
  • 2003 certified as Living National Treasure[6][2]. Following his grandfather Onoe Kikugorō VI and his father Onoe Baikō VII[7].
