The Ontario Land Trust Alliance (OLTA) is an environmental NGO and a registered environmental charity in Ontario, Canada.[1] It is the umbrella organization for 95 member land trusts in Ontario, qualified to receive ecological gifts through the eco-gifts program of Environment and Climate Change Canada (Canada).[2][3]

OLTA members and associates include:[4]

OLTA members work to help Canada meet its obligations under the 2015 Convention on Biological Diversity, pursuant to which Canada committed to conserving 17% of terrestrial area and inland water by 2020. By the end of 2019, Canada was not on track, having conserved just 12.1%.[5] By conserving forests and other ecologically significant land, OLTA members are part of the effort to limit global warming, specifically by serving as carbon sinks, identified as one of the solutions to climate change by Project Drawdown.

OLTA administers the distribution of federal funds through the Ontario Land Trust Assistance Program on behalf of Environment and Climate Change Canada, aimed at protecting species at risk.[6]

OLTA promotes the adoption of the Canadian Land Trust Standards and Practices for its members.[7] OLTA has long-running strategic partnership relationships with the Ontario government, Ducks Unlimited, and Nature Conservancy of Canada, the largest land trust in Canada.[8] [9] It is a member of the Canadian Land Trusts Working Group, which provides submissions of the conservation sector to the federal government regarding conservation programs and funding.[10] OLTA has received significant funding from the Province of Ontario and the Federal government, such as Capacity Building Funds in 2019 in the amount of $20 million, together with parallel land trust organizations in British Columbia and Quebec. [11][12]

OLTA hosts an annual conservation conference in Prince Edward County, at which it recognizes conservationists with awards to members of the Ontario land trust community. [13]
