Onyeka Kerous Ibeanusi (born Onyeka Ibeanusi 19 June) is a Nigerian Musician, Writer, Poet, author, social commentator, entrepreneur and founder of Hype9ja.com. He is also known by his stage name Kerous and sometimes referred to as Onyeckerous, born into the family of Mr and Pastor Mrs Felix Ibeanusi from Oburo Ogwa in Mbaitoli Local Government Area in Imo State, South Eastern Nigeria. He was raised in a large family with eight siblings in Warri Delta State where he attended Aileru Primary School, Hussey College and Wisdom Secondary Commercial Academy before studying Mechanical Engineering in the University of Benin.

Background[edit]

He grew up with a love for artistic displays, construction of toys and stage plays and took the name Frank at the age of 12 after losing a very close childhood friend Frank Tonwei. In most of his documents, he is registered as Onyeka Frank Ibeanusi. Though he often seemed quiet among his peers, Onyeka was always the center of attention as a child. He once featured as Odewale in Ola Rotimi's Gods are not to blame. As a young child growing up in Nigeria, his love for social justice and good governance grew and his lyrics and music style was an expression of his thoughts with huge influence from Michael Jackson, Fela, Tupac Shakur, Bob Marley and many others. In 1995, he performed a song with his immediate elder sister Ngozi before a huge crowd in church and went break dancing which sent the church into frenzy.

Career[edit]

In 1999, he tried his hands on fiction; writing a book titled "Risky Business" which never saw the light of day. He became famous on campus for performing in small shows while studying Mechanical Engineering before officially delving into music after graduation.[1]

In 2007, he published his first book titled Now You Can Run The World[2] and became very popular after releasing various singles. His music style is a fusion of many genres with huge influence from artistes like Kanye West, Wyclef, Asa, D'banj, 2face Idibia and many others.

He also has other singles like Serious Music, Superstar and Battle of the Emcees. His articles have appeared on various Nigerian popular blogs like Linda Ikeji,[3] Sahara Reporters[4] and many other Nigerian blogs which earned him a weekly column on one of Nigeria's biggest newspapers, Business Day.[5] In 2014, he featured in a CCTV Africa[6] documentary.

He has featured in many events including spirit of Lagos. In 2012, he took a short break to focus on political matters as he worked with Governor Olusegun Mimiko's former Special Duties Aide- late Seyi Adeniyi alongside Showunmi Rex for close to two years before returning to pursue his music and writing career.

After releasing a seemingly successful single titled More in 2012,[7] he has continued to pursue his musical, writing, social commentary and politically motivated careers, having worked with various political teams in the past. He has always shown love for politics and was active in his university days and even acted as a campaign manager for a friend while running for a position on campus. He believes that politics is not just a business for the celebrated politicians, but a way to contribute meaningfully to the society.
