The Opel Manta Concept was a planned battery-electric crossover SUV developed by Opel under Stellantis as the intended replacement for the Opel Insignia. The concept car, whose name is yet to be revealed, was shown at a Stellantis presentation in June 2026.[1]
The project reportedly reached an advanced stage of development before being cancelled by Stellantis in 2026. The vehicle's development was subsequently transferred to Peugeot for use as the basis of a future flagship model, widely expected to be marketed as the Peugeot 608.[2]
History
Following the discontinuation of the Opel Insignia in 2022, Opel was expected to introduce a new flagship model based on Stellantis' dedicated electric vehicle architecture. Early reports suggested the replacement would abandon the traditional saloon body style in favour of a crossover design while retaining the Insignia name.[3]
The vehicle was reportedly developed on the STLA Medium platform and intended to become Opel's electric flagship. According to Motor.es, Stellantis cancelled the programme shortly before production approval and reassigned the project to Peugeot. The platform, engineering work and design are reportedly expected to underpin a future Peugeot flagship model, commonly referred to in media reports as the Peugeot 608.[2]
Design
The planned model was reported to feature a fastback-inspired crossover body, representing a departure from the conventional liftback and estate body styles of previous Insignia generations. It was expected to use Stellantis' STLA Medium battery-electric platform shared with several large electric vehicles within the group.
Cancellation
The project was reportedly cancelled in 2026 as part of Stellantis' product strategy revisions. Opel would instead concentrate on SUVs and other electric models while Peugeot would inherit the development work for its own flagship electric crossover.[2]
