OpenHMD is a cross-platform software development library and driver stack designed to provide full open source drivers for head-mounted displays and virtual reality devices.[1]

    Overview[edit]

The library is internally written in C and has a compatible API for easy upgradability. The drivers are built based on device specification or, when this is not available, through reverse engineering. There are multiple language bindings available, such as Perl, Python, .NET, Java and Volt.

    History[edit]

OpenHMD was initially started in 2013 as a project to provide Linux and Mac drivers for the Oculus Rift DK1 after Oculus did not deliver on this[2]. After more devices started to emerge and wider adoption of the library began, OpenHMD continued implementing multiple drivers for a wide array of devices[1]. It continues to grow as a full open source, hardware agnostic solution for Games and 3D Applications.

Since release '0.3.0 Djungelvral'[3], over 10 VR/AR devices are supported in several states of functionality, with the NOLO VR CV1 being the first fully positional tracked device having the same level of support as the commercial driver counterpart.[4]

    Usage[edit]

Open Source game engine Godot supports OpenHMD since the 3.0 release[5] with an official plugin[6]. Popular multi-platform video player VLC has marked version 4.0 to include OpenHMD support.[7] OpenHMD is also featured as first open source device driver for the OpenXR Linux runtime Monado.[8]
