OpenHV is a real time strategy game. With source code released under GNU General Public License and game art under Creative Commons licenses it is a free and open-source video game. Being developed in C# running on the .NET platform, it is available for Linux, Microsoft Windows and macOS. The first release was published in September 2020.
Gameplay[edit]
The player starts with resource collection by building a specific unit, which transforms into a mining building on top of deposits that are spread across the map. After a while, transport trucks leave the mine towards a storage building delivering the money. These supply lines have to be guarded as the tankers destroyed and looted. Similar to the rest of the genre, the player sets out to build an army to conquer the enemy player, with the game world being simulated in real-time.[1]
Development[edit]
The game is based on Hard Vacuum a real-time strategy game that was originally scheduled for release after Dune II, but before Warcraft or Command and Conquer, but was never finished or published. The pixel artist Daniel Cook eventually released them as open-content.[2] It also added some remastered Tyrian and Iron Plague artwork, but otherwise recreated the gameplay from scratch using the OpenRA engine featuring single-player, LAN, online multiplayer as well as map editor in a cross-platform fashion.[3]
Reception[edit]
Liam Dawe rated the early version as very promising and amazing to see what people can cook up.[2] The game will feel similar to anyone who played an RTS game before.[3] It is really enjoyable.[1] Lee Reilly praised it as a remarkable project that is both making something new and an act of preservation[4] Adrian Werner from Gamepressure states that the game is not a typical game engine recreation because Hard Vacuum was never released, only the game art was published. Daniel Cook's sprite still look great today, especially in the high resolution that OpenHV runs. Skirmishes are fast-paced on a large scale, with plenty of improvements on the proven solution of an early RTS game, making the gameplay not outdated. It has a small but active community and is constantly being developed.[5]
