OpenUp (company)
OpenUp is an Amsterdam-based mental health technology company focused on workplace mental health.[1] It was founded by Gijs Coppens in 2019. The platform provides individuals with access to licensed psychologists and digital tools for preventive care.[1][2]
History
The company was founded in 2019 by Gijs Coppens, a healthcare psychologist with a background in engineering and clinical psychology, and backed by founding investor Floris Rost van Tonningen.[1][3] OpenUp initially operated using a direct-to-consumer model where users would pay on a donation basis, which was eventually phased out due to being unsustainable.[4] The platform switched to a subscription model during the COVID-19 pandemic.[4]One of OpenUp's earliest clients included Erasmus University Rotterdam.[5]
OpenUp eventually expanded operations into Germany and Austria.[1] In October 2022, OpenUp announced plans to expand operations into France, Spain, and the UK.[1]
In 2024, OpenUp released the OpenUp mobile app, which allows customers to use the platform's services and schedule one-on-one consultations through their phones.[6] In the same year, OpenUp was named to the Sifted 250 List, which lists the fastest growing healthtech companies.[7]
In May 2025, OpenUp Group divested its iPractice business unit, which was acquired by the investment firm Smile Invest, which obtained a majority stake in iPractice.[8][9][10]
Platform and services
OpenUp offers services such as one-on-one consultations with licensed psychologists, physical health experts, and financial coaches within 48 hours,[11] self-directed learning tools and content,[4] group sessions, workshops, and masterclasses[4][12] health checks,[4] and mindfulness training.[12] OpenUp services are designed to be preventive.[11]
OpenUp's business model is primarily a B2B subscription model.[4][11] Employees of companies subscribed to OpenUp receive free and direct access to the platform's licensed professionals and tools.[12] Employees' personal data and session details are kept confidential from their employers.[13]
OpenUp also provides training and support for its licensed professionals, who are vetted before joining the platform.[4]
