OSMC (also known as Open Source Media Center) is a Linux distribution built for a variety of devices. It is designed to provide a HTPC experience and is based on Kodi entertainment center. OSMC is based on two former Linux distributions designed by Sam Nazarko, Crystalbuntu which was designed for the first generation Apple TV and Raspbmc which was designed for Raspberry Pi.
OSMC is based on the Debian[2] Linux distribution and was founded in 2014. It is designed to run Kodi as the main application and automatically updates itself. It features an App Store and a custom Kodi skin that ships by default. Updates and software packages are delivered via Debian's APT (Advanced Packaging Tool) system and the full set of Debian packages are available for installation.
History[edit]
OSMC is the successor to Raspbmc and Crystalbuntu.[3][4] All three distributions were developed by Sam Nazarko, who was once described by Liz Upton, Raspberry Pi's community manager as a 'terrifyingly young developer'.[5]
