Optibus is a transportation technology SaaS company.[1][2][3]

Overview[edit]

Optibus uses patented optimization algorithms, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence to develop products for public transportation route planning, crew, and vehicle scheduling.[4][5][6][7] The company's software is used in more than 2,000 cities across 30 countries in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia Pacific.[8][6][9]

It is headquartered in Tel Aviv and has offices in New York, San Francisco, London, Lisbon, Santiago, Berlin, Portland, Paris, and São Paulo.[4][10]

History[edit]

Optibus was established in 2014 by Amos Haggiag and Eitan Yanovsky.[11][12][13]

In February 2021, ioki, a Deutsche Bahn subsidiary, partnered with Optibus to accelerate the integration of fixed-route and on-demand transportation in the DACH region and the rest of Europe.[4][14][12] Later in December, the company announced its partnership with Enel X to create an end-to-end solution for electric bus operations.[15][16]

In April 2022, Optibus acquired Trillium, a Portland, Oregon-based SaaS company.[8] The same month, Optibus and SCINTL Limited were selected by Tondeka Metro Company (TMC) to create Uganda's first public bus network in Kampala with permission from Ugandan Government and sponsorship of World Bank.[4][8][17][18]

The company launched Ridership Insights to enable the visualization and analysis of patronage data directly on a map during network planning.[19][20][21] In July 2022, Volvo Group Venture Capital invested in Optibus to advance the transition to electric buses and digitalize public transportation operations.[22]

As per Viola's 2022 report, Optibus is one of 85 Israeli companies valued at over $1 billion.[23][24] In 2022, New Era invested as the first fund in Optibus, which has already raised close to $200m.[3] In 2023, Optibus received investment from Verizon Ventures.[25]

Recognition[edit]

In 2018, Optibus was recognized by Gartner as a Cool Vendor,[10] and in 2020, the World Economic Forum recognized it as a Technology Pioneer.[5][26]

In August 2022, the company won Better E-Bus Challenge 2022 for its software platform organized by the World Resources Institute India (WRI) with support from the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) E-Bus Mission;[27] and received the APTA AdWheel award for Best Educational Social Media.[28] The company's staff have also been recognized for contributing to the field, listed on Mass Transit's 40 under 40 lists.[29] In 2022, it was listed among the Top 50 Startups List by Calcalist.[13]
